Chance me for University Park!

Ok, here is what I got

I seriously was NEVER told my exact GPA or anything like that, but my 3-year UW GPA is around about 3.2. I go to a private school,
Extra-curricular - Ciivil Air Patrol(1 year) , Police Explorers(4 years) , National Honor Society(2 years) , Track (2 years), Service Club ( 4 years), Junior Thesbians (1 year), Chess Club (1 year)
Volunteer work: spent 60 hours volunteering a hospital
Highest SAT scores
M: 590
CR:510
W:550

And also, I would like to take Aeronautical Engineering and join the AFROTC program up there.

If you need any more info, feel free to ask, I will try my best to respond.

Another thing, please only people who have applied and GOT A RESPONSE BACK (accepted,rejected,wait-listed) answer this question. This also includes if you know somebody else who did what I just said above.

Thank you :-D

Really will depend on your weighted GPA, so maybe your school can tell you.

I’d say no to main campus, especially for engineering. I had the same SATs, and a bit higher GPA (93 avg W), I applied DUS/summer and was initially offered a branch only. ECs don’t really matter, although I think strength of schedule may help a bit. I had AP and honors classes, too.

Engineering and business are very competitive to get into main campus, and the HS class of 2010 is going to have as difficult or an even more difficult of a time getting into main campus than the class of 09. The economy will still be a factor and sheer volume of kids applying will make for some very strong applicants.

And that bubble chart is a few years old now.

“the HS class of 2010 is going to have as difficult or an even more difficult of a time getting into main campus than the class of 09.”

I’m not sure about this yet. One of the big factors why PSU had such an influx of applicants last year was due to the winning fb team. If the lions tank it this year that will significantly cut down on the # of applications and competitivness of getting in.

Regarding the chance of the OP- I’d say go and ask for your GPA, you are iffy with your current SAT score. Have you tried the ACTs? A lot of students do a lot better on the ACTs compared to the SATs- slightly different way of thinking test.

^^^Well, maybe the football team had something to do with it, but I’d say the economy pushing kids toward state schools, as well as the high number of high school graduates also had lots to do with it. Almost every state school had record applicants last year, not just PSU. I remember from a NY Times article that the class of 2009 had the highest amount of high school graduates in US history, and I think that I remember reading somewhere that class 0f 2010 was slightly larger. Not only was PSU applicant pool larger, it was also stronger, with the ‘cutoff’ for main campus higher than in the past. Look at the stats of kids on this board that were rejected from main.

And I’m sure PSU will really be inundated this year, now that we’re the #1 party school :-)

So in order words, by what you guys are saying and by the admission bubble chart…

Penn State University Park is really just another name for University of Pennsylvania?

Wow…FTW(the OTHER meaning of FTW, not the one you’re thinking of)

^^^ Not sure what you mean…

But,

You should definately apply anyway; just don’t count on it and have some back ups. Also, take the SATS again or try the ACTs and try to better your score; that may help. Main campus is sooo worth the effort you may put into getting there.

i got accepted with slightly higher SAT scores ( 610, and 540… i believe)… I would apply early and I applied undecided. If I were you I would apply undecided… you could switch your major later

All state schools have become dramatically more competitive. Kids within PA who might have otherwise gone to Lehigh or Bucknell (before their parents lost half of their college fund)…are now going to Penn State. It’s a trend seen in almost all state schools. I had clients this year get accepted to George Washington and rejected from Penn State. It wouldn’t have been the case 3 years ago.

There’s a big statistical difference between a 3.2 and a 91 gpa (assuming their both unweighted.)

US News & WR ranked Penn State firmly above Maryland College Park, and above many previously more competitive private schools.

It’s certainly emerging from it’s party school status and becoming recognized as a real player academically.
