your SAT score isn’t stellar for UM, but your AP scores might tip the scale a bit. You definitely have a decent chance but it’s no guarantee. Get good letters, retake the SAT, and definitely have some backup schools. UM is not an automatic admission for anyone these days.

For the Class of 2022, the in-state acceptance rate was 41%. I think you have a very good chance. But, if it were my kid, I have him or her take the SAT again and try to raise the score into the 1,400’s. uwGPA and rigor are the two most important factors according to the CDS and you have that “in spades.”

I wanted to add that I noted a few in-state LSA applicants who were accepted with ACT scores as low as 28 and SAT scores of 1,360-1,370 here on CC. But I’d consider those more exceptions than the rule.

Thanks for such quick responses guys! I am definitely shooting to break 1400 on the August SAT. I have finally enlisted in an SAT Tutor and have been scoring around 1450s so hopefully I can do it on my last attempt. Would a 1390 be a dealbreaker for me as an applicant?

No, I don’t think the 1,390 would be a “dealbreaker.” But I’d feel warmer and fuzzier with a 1,450 +/-. Being first gen REALLY helps too.

1390 is not a dealbreaker for sure, but even just a few tutoring sessions will likely bring you up over 1400 anyway. It’s a good investment.

You have to improve that SAT math score. Not hard to do. Maybe you need a little coaching or maybe you figure it out on your own. 750 is gettable.

Your GPA and your AP scores speak volumes. As stated If you get the Sat up then if course your chances are improved but you already knew that. I agree with raising the math score. Do your best and report back

Hi guys, just received my August SAT. I received a 690 RW & 730 M (1420). I now have a 1430 Superscore if UofM does that. I’m a little disappointed because I thought I could get 1450. Could anyone rechance me? Thank you!!

No superscoring

Please chance me. COE Biomedical Engineering. Michigan is not a sure shot for anyone anymore.
Instate. Female. SAT 1520 SAT Subjects: Bio 800, Math 800, Chem 760
GPA 4.0 unwt, 9 APs all 5s - 4APs in senior yea
Significant hospital volunteering (400+ hours). Summer research at a University.
President of 2 clubs. One is largest in school and second is a language club I founded. National Merit semifinalist (hopeful), Won awards at poetry competitions, National Language competitions. 4 year varsity athlete. Scholar Athlete awards.
Strong essays and recommendations (i think).

Michigan is my target school. MSU is backstop. 3 reach programs (GA tech, MIT, Hopkins) all BME.

@sammyGA. So Michigan State Honors is a given and reduce tuition and possible a full ride (if their still doing it), is a possibility.
Michigan is tough for anyone and especially Biomedical. I like your profile. Apply EA and I honestly feel you have a great shot but as you know nothing is a guarantee with Michigan.
I would also have a few more safeties. I know the Michigan mentality is to apply to Michigan, Michigan State and Wayne or /and Grand Valley it seems. I would try for some more matches also. GaTech will like your profile and that your female. Hopkins and MIT is at shot in the dark but go for it.

@Knowsstuff

Thank you. I will be ready to apply shortly
I will also apply to Case and BU. Alongwith MIT and Hopkins, they superscore. My SS is 1560. Wish Michigan superscored :(. And OSU. I do not want to go to Wayne/CMU/WMU/GV. We are double legacy at Michigan and my sister is there in the business school. At Mich - none of this may matter. I have see other double legacies get denied. This is my top choice and will pay my deposit in December if I get EA. Fingers crossed and thanks once again.

We are OOS for Michigan even though I grew up in Oak Park years ago and by wife is from Southfield (just not fair… Joking people?).
She went to Michigan. She would “not” let my son apply to OSU for any reason… Lol.
I get the reasons on the other schools also. But right now Michigan State is your only safety and things are changing there as well. Case should be a good get for you but again not a guarantee. Either is BU… Many get denied with your stats.
Think of a few others that you would be happy to go to. This is the sound of experience talking to you ??.
So Michigan doesn’t super score per se BUT they will “look” at all your scores so send those in. I call it “sorta” super scoring… Lol.
Your a strong candidate for Michigan and wish you all the luck but many instate with your profile still didn’t get in last few years. That is why for the safeties.

some very interesting entering student profile. looks like apps have tapered at 65k. ~100 national merit finalists - WOW.

Wow what? Apps tapered? UMich has 64,917 for the Class of 2022 and 65,716 for the Class of 2023. That would be an increase, but maybe you’re referring to the the year-to-year increase slowed down.

OTOH, UCLA’s apps “tapered” from its high of 114,000 last year (Class of 2022, the Year of Dragon) to 111,000 for the Class of 2023.

@Knowsstuff
Thanks for the advice. I got into Pitt BME within a week of applying and i sent in the other 5 apps incl Michigan last week. I spoke with my counsellor since we send over 40 kids each year with a big yield. There are no guarantees but she said that she would pick up the phone and call the region AO if i got deferred. So lets see.

We did agree to apply to Ohio SNAKE… but i would love to join my alum dad and student brother for the bowl game every year. I may end having the last laugh given how awful michigan is plauing if i end up at OSU.

Congrats!!! Maybe have your counselor talk to the Michigan AO now? If they have a relationship that could be a plus. Good luck.
