Sounds to me like you have a good chance. Ivies are a reach for almost everyone, but your SAT score is definitely high enough to be competitive (do you plan on retaking?), your SAT IIs are great, and your GPA(s) are great too. Keep up the good work, and good luck!

You have a great chance

Thank you guys! I don’t plan to re take the SAT. do you think it’ll be okay? I want to concentrate on my APs and ECs.

I was pretty happy with my original score, which was close to yours, but my parents forced me to take it again and I improved by 40 net points (not much, but enough to bump me into the next hundred). It’s up to you. If you think you could improve, I’d say why not retake it once. But if you think your time could be better spent elsewhere, then do that–you know what’s best for you atm, and your score is already pretty dang impressive!

Your SAT score is above average at every major college in the US (excluding Caltech, with an average of 2300), so you really don’t need to retake your SAT score unless you REALLY want to go through that whole process again. Additionally, since you attend a school where the average SAT score isn’t anywhere near yours, your score looks even more impressive.

In my opinion, your stats and ECs look fantastic, so as long as you write a thoughtful, original essay and procure glowing recs (difficult but very possible tasks), you’ll definitely get into some top-tier schools, even if not UPenn.

Also, a word of advice: apply ED to UPenn! Only the top applicants get in early, but you’re certainly in that pool, so your chances of admission will increase substantially :)

For UPenn i would say a low reach. its an ivy after all

@Thebeatlestoday, Thank you! I’ll certainly try.

@bodangles, I was debating too. Actually in my case it’s opposite - I wanted to retake, but my parents objected. They said it’s not necessary. I made two stupid mistakes in math and they cost me 60 points! My mom said do well in math II to show you actually know 3x3 is not equal to 6. I was afraid I’d make mistakes like that again, which I almost always do. So it’s risky to take it again.

You’re an amazing candidate for UPenn!! If you are a junior and applying next year, then apply ED, it raises your chances significantly.

Other schools to look into:
Northwestern
Vanderbilt
UC Berkeley
Georgetown
Emory
Rice
U Chicago
U of Michigan (safety)
Brown
Dartmouth

I think taking the SAT twice takes out a lot of the randomness of a single test. If you get a perfect math next time, great. If you don’t, well maybe a 740 really is your math score. You could study more for it if you are really trying to improve, but I don’t think it is worth your time. You are just trying to improve your sample size. So it won’t take you any more than a Saturday morning to take the test. The only concern I have, and I don’t know the answer to it, is this: what would a college think if you got all lower scores on every section? Would it take a bit of the impressiveness away from your first score, or do they really just plug in the higher scores up front and only see those later. I think they see all the scores, and a 2280 on one sitting is sufficiently impressive so that you don’t need to take it again. On the other hand, I think some schools have somewhat of a formula for merit aid related to your score (Case Western and WashU come to mind as possibly doing this), so getting over 2300 may change your merit offers. I guess I could go either way.
