Chance me for UPenn ED SEAS- Please and Thank you

repost, so embarassing..made a typo in the other

I want to apply to SEAS and major in computer science. I go to one of the best public schools and pennsyvania and my GPA is meh.. I'm one of those unfortunate High SAT low GPA students. ( i hate my past self looking back. hindsight sure is 20/20)

I used to want to major in business. But since then i had a change of heart and realized cs is my calling. ( my dad majored in comp sci - not at upenn tho). But that explains the business ECs.

I'm hoping that since I am a female and and PA residant (30 min away from upenn) it would give me a boost.

I know it's a stretch hence why Im applying ED.

The average accepted at my school is a weighted GPA of 4.03 and SAT or 2107.

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown M/CR/W/Essay): 790/720/700/10 (2210) One sitting and only took it once
ACT (breakdown): never took
SAT II (subject, score): Math II (800), Chemistry (760) and will be taking physics in Oct
Unweighted/Weighted GPA: 3.67/ 4.0 (i cry, i cry)

theres also been an unward trend in GPA values, idk if that helps at all.

and to translate my GPA.
Freshman: I had A-s, As, and one B- (spanish) and one B+ (history)
Soph: A-s, As, B (spanish), B- ( double honors pre-calc)
Junior: A-s, As, B- (history), B+ (spanish)

Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): idk my school doesnt rank im guessing 10%-15%
AP/IB (place score in parentheses): AB calc (5) Stat (5) Chem (4) APUSH (3 dont wanna submit this)
Senior Year Course Load:
-AP Physics
-AP Calc BC
-AP Comp Sci
-AP english
-AP Spanish
-intro to engineering
-H orchestra

Number of other ED applicants in your school: im guessing 10-20
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel, etc.): no..
Common Awards (AP Scholar, honor roll, NM things, etc.): AP scholar, National Merit, Distinguished Honor Roll

Subjective:
Extracurriculars (name, grade levels, leadership, description): Founder and Co-pre of DoSomething.org Club at my school (junior, senior). FBLA (2011-now), Service Board ( 2011-now), team captain for Physics Olympics (2013-now), Annenburg science club (2013-now), Varisty ultimate frisbee ( 2012-now), Piano (10 years, major time commitment)
Job/Work Experience: Chinese summer camp teacher asistant
Volunteer/Community Service: hosiptal (100 hrs), various community service (lots of hours)

Teacher Recommendation #1: my math teacher who i had for 2 years (3 counting senior year) 10/10
Teacher Recommendation #2: ap chem teacher - generic probably 8/10
Counselor Rec: slightly above average probably 9/10
Additional Info/Rec: might get a penn alumni to write one for me idk

there probably more EC that are minor that I havent thought of yet

CommonApp Essay: a challenge i faced. 9.5/10
Why Penn: CUZ ITS UPENN. havent wrote this yet. but i'll really try to kill this one

be honest and nice please. Its an emotional and tough time for all of us

(also if you can recommend other schools that you think will fit me thats on the east coast lmk)

feel free to post links to your forums and i'll give my opinion

Bump. Please help me out pleaseeee

Hello, I’m Chinese & applying to computer science at upenn as well. I would suggest that you put the most effort into your essay, because that’s the last part of the application which can really make a difference.

(Let’s face it, it’s not worth it to pump more hours in – the admissions officers won’t even care if it’s 100 or 150 hours.)

Even though you have decided on computer science, I would still suggest that you get a recommendation from an english/social science teacher. It makes your application more diverse, and besides, english teachers can write well.

a 3.67 basically cuts the bottom part of penn: I suggest you look at this graph:

http://0.tqn.com/d/collegeapps/1/S/-/N/-/-/UniversityofPenn.png

Although there are a lot of 4.0s, there is also a fair number of 3.7 - 3.9s. If at all possible, you should try to bring your gpa to 3.7 or 3.8

Feel free to message me any questions if you have em.

oh, and here’s mine

Thank you so much, very helpful and insightful

buuump

Please, anyone else?

I don’t want to sound mean but UPenn is a quite a big reach for you. GPA is quite important for college admissions that’s usually the first thing they consider. Nevertheless, they will look at your SAT Score and ECS. I think your ECS are looking solid(piano). Your SAT score is good, not stellar. Applying as a business major will not help you stand out. Now engineering is a completely different story. Make sure to make your essays WOW the admissions officers.

@tryhardalay‌ Im kinda confused about what you’re saying about majoring. I 99.9% positive I wanna apply for the engineering school. I used to wanna do business, but I now longer wanting to apply ( even tho I have business ECs).

Do I have a slim chance for Engineering? or nah…

Standardized test scores: SAT total score is nice, but Writing score could be a bit higher.
Grades: Class rank is good but not within the top 5-10% that most others will be applying with. GPA could also be higher. Course rigor: Taking 4 APs between Soph and Junior year is great, but far less than most others who will be applying. Plus you seem to have struggled in AP History class Junior year.
ECs: you have a list of solid activities, with some evidence of leadership. However the list of activities is similar to most other students and doesn’t stand out particularly to me.

How do you stack up vs the 10-20 other students from your school applying? My guess is that you will be around the middle of the pack.

Overall I agree with others. Penn ED will be a reach for you. Try to portray yourself in an interesting light. Have you considered instead of applying engineering trying for Accounting/Finance? You have some ECs along this field and seems like you may have a better chance

Oh my bad I thought you were majoring in business. We’ll then, if you are applying as an engineering major then that will help you stand out. You have a good chance of getting in because not many girls want to pursue engineering. @HelpAnAznGirlOut‌

@sgopal2‌ thanks for you honest and helpful opinion. It definately gives me some insight. I know it’s a stretch, but no harm in trying eh?

maybe if you applied RD you could show your improvement! they like an “upward trend” in grades  chance me back if you have a few minutes? I may be applying to penn RD this coming year as well

I wish I could apply later so I can show my improvement I my senior grades, but so many more people apply during RD. I was thinking applying ED would heighten my chances. thoughts?

apply RD, because if your gpa isnt up to the mark for REA they will reject you.

anyone else?

should I apply ED or RD with my stats?

apply RD if you can do something significant from mid-october to december. So you should apply RD because you can improve your GPA.

You have a chance.

The GPA is a challenge, and the SAT is only average for Penn but the math scores are good. Your science related ECs are also positive. Being Asian will raise the bar a bit, but being a female applying to SEAS and being a Pennsylvania resident will lower the bar a bit.

I would try to spend some time and effort letting your rec writers get to know you. That may translate into stronger recs. I would also try to nail the first term, and work hard on your essays.

Bumpp.

Also is the more subject tests, the better? (For penn)

And anymore chances? Anyone :(

And thank you everyone for ur response. I am now reconsidering whether to do ED or RD

Ok I’ve decided ED it is! Anymore chances please?
