I have my extracurriculars going for me, and my ACT score isn’t bad, but obviously my GPA is weighing me down. My essays are usually very well written. What are my chances for these schools and what major should I apply with to increase my chances?

It will be very difficult to get into MIT or Jerome Fisher @ Wharton with a 3.69 UW and a 31 ACT. Everything else looks good though. The state schools are likely admits.

GPA is low for MIT and Penn. It would be a throw away application kind of thing.

Unfortunately, other than being 1st generation college applicant there is little that stands out for places like MIT and M&T. I second DrGoogle’s assessment. Georgia Tech is a very good engineering school, and would probably be a good fit.

Agree with above. MIT and UPenn are not really feasible.

I’m only applying to MIT and UPenn because they’ve both been dream schools from a young age and I would almost regret not applying there although I do realize that both of those are for the most part unrealistic with the GPA I have.

Okay, just as so long as you know.

One piece of advice: Drop the EC’s senior year and work on your grades. If you can up your GPA to somewhere around top 10% and an ACT of 34, then you have a chance at MIT (also if you pour your heart and soul into the essays). Did you take any subject tests? What were your AP scores?
Your chances at MIT are definitely not 0 if you can up your stats first semester of senior year.
I think having a 3.7 GPA in a top 15% class coupled with strong AP scores can show that the school is just really tough. Being top 10% is more important than GPA.

M&T is probably not going to happen as it is the most competitive undergrad program to get into, more competitive than Harvard, MIT and any other school out there. If it’s your dream, then sure nobody can stop you from applying, just a warning from the rest of us that it is almost a rejection as it is so, so, so darn hard to get into.

I’m taking my subject tests this September or October (Physics & Math II) and I’m averaging 725-775 each time. I’ll definitely be working harder on my grades than anything else (with testing of course). I took AP European History (3), APUSH (4), AP Lang(5).

I know M&T is near impossible, again, applying with absolutely no expectations to get in. But thanks for the advice with MIT, I’m doing all I possibly can with my essays for sure!

Don’t drop your EC’s…WTF??? Keep doing what you’re doing. Write fantastic essays.

Drop ECs? I’m not sure about that advice.
