So TL;DR: Asian male with pretty decent class rank, average test scores, and shitty EC’s. How are my chances to get into UT Austin’s Cockrell School of Engineering for ECE?

Your stats are very similar to my son’s and he is starting ECE this year. He is an Asian male, TX resident, ACT 34, SAT (just under 2100, can’t recall all but know math was 750), no SAT II, class rank 22/about 700 so top 2-3%… Sons school activities were Mu Alpha Theta(1 yr), French honor society(3 yrs) and marching band(4 yrs). He volunteered at the library and had leadership in his church youth group. As an ECE major, you will likely be able to use very few of your AP credits. Son is using AP Calc AB or BC (he got 5 in both). He also got AP Stat (5), AP Chem (4), AP Physics 1(4), AP Englilsh (3), AP French (3), AP World Hist (5), AP Comp Sci (4). He is only claiming the Calculus credit and skipping the first semester of Calc but all other AP credit courses are not on the ECE degree plan. It costs $20 to claim each credit and there is not much benefit to claiming. No sense to claim just to use as an elective credit that does not count on the degree plan. He does place out of an English class but not sure if he is using the AP credit or ACT score for the credit. He took American History, Government and Econ at the community college to use as high school credits and he should be able to use the History and Govt. Son applied late November and did not find out about his major until February. He was not accepted into honors.

parentof3kids- you said he might have used act score to get out of college english?..
never heard of that… how does that work?

You can get credit for the freshman rhetoric class with a high enough SAT or ACT writing score. See site below.

http://ctl.utexas.edu/studenttesting/exams?field_subject_area_tid=10&field_exam_type_tid=All&combine=

You can also get credit for physics with a high enough SAT Physics score.
