CHANCE ME FOR UT,UCSD,BERKELEY,A&M,UM-ANN ARBOR (I will Chance Back!)

Hello all,

I am currently a high school senior looking to apply in the Aerospace or Mechanical fields in the fall . The thing I am worried about is my rank because I go to one of the most competitive high schools in the entire nation (rank 47) and we have IB, which means GPA's are rounded to the nearest thousandth of a point! Anyways, I will list my "stats" and please chance me, or let me know what I can do to raise my chances?

GPA Weighted/Unweighted: 4.5 W/3.5 UW

Rank: 244/625 (top 39%)

SAT: 1st time- 500 CR, 630 M, 610 W: 1750
2nd time- 530 CR, 700 M, 690 W: 1920
Planning to take 3rd time w/ goal of 2100+

ACT: 26

SAT Subject Test (waiting on scores): Math 2- 650, Physics- 520, Lit- 480

AP/Dual Credit: WHAP-3,
AP Physics B-3,
AP Eng. Language-3
Next year: AP Calc AB, AP Physics C, AP Eng. Lit,US.Gov
(I have taken nothing but Pre-AP or AP classes during high school)
Dual Credit courses (at college): US History, Macro

Job Experience/Volunteering: -Worked at Kumon as a tutor/grading papers for 3 months,
-100+ hours at local temple,
-30+ hours with cultural organization,
-15 hours with Engineering club at school

Extracurriculars: -Science Olympiad (won 2 2nd place medals at State, 3 other medals at regionals)
-TAME (5th place for physics),
-Aerospace Engineering Internship at UT Austin ,
-2 years football,
-Engineering club,
-Aerospace club.
-AP Scholar,
-Played piano for 5 years,
-was in TAG (talented and gifted program) since 6th grade,
-active member of cultural group with volunteering and running programs,
-volunteering at my local temple.
-working on PLTW Engineering Diploma (STEM courses)

You show your interest clearly through extra curriculars but tbh you really have to work on test scores. Your sat subject test scores are not that good and you have to really work on them or just not take them.
Your unweighted gpa is ok but make sure to not drop it because anything under a 3.5 is not good.
I think you have a good shot at UT seeing that you did an internship so that definitely shows you have interest in the school and program (but it depends on if UT looks at interest)
You cant really do much about your ranking so whatevs. I totally understand you because I’m around the same rank and my school has soo many competitive students who are aiming for Ivy League schools.
Idk what to say for Berkeley because that acceptance rate is really low, make sure you show that you actually have a personality in your essays because they will already know all your clubs and extracurriculars.
UCSD isn’t as hard as Berkeley to get into so you have a decent shot at it.
Idk much about A&M and UM Ann Arbor

Btw, could you chance me back?

@lahula521‌ DONE :slight_smile:

Your GPA and EC’s are good, especially with your intended major. But, like lahula said, your test scores are your biggest weak point. You’ll be set if you raise your SATs to 2100+ and maybe retake your math and physics subject tests if you have the time. I wouldn’t bother sending colleges your literature subject test score unless you retake it and raise the score.

I think you have a great shot at UT and U Mich. I don’t know enough about A&M to chance you. UCSD is low reach and UCB and UCLA are reaches with your test scores. However, your chances improve considerably if you are an instate applicant-- do you live in CA?

Also, you should consider asking your math/science teachers for recs bc of your intended major. Besides all that, focus on writing good essays and raising your test scores and you’ll be a competitive applicant. Best of luck in the college process–work hard and you’ll succeed wherever you end up! :)

Chance me back please!

Thank you for the comprehensive review! And I live in Texas but I went to a competitive high school in San Diego back in the 9th grade though

Your class rank, GPA, and test scores all match up pretty well. I don’t think there is anything to do with the competitiveness of your school though.
UT, UCB, and UMich would be all reach (rather high reach) for you.
Your SAT score is better than your ACT right now (1920 is about 28). For top engineering schools, you do need to improve your test scores a lot and particularly your Math section score and Math2 score as you are really far behind other candidates in this regard.

@billcsho‌ do you think the fact that I did an internship with UT in co ordinance with NASA would increase my chances for UT??

@vs1997 That is a good EC. That would help if you are marginally qualify. If you do get a better SAT score and improve your GPA a little bit (that is all you can do with 1 additional semester grade), you will have a better chance. Make sure you focus on the improvement in Math score. That is really weak for top engineering schools.

I don’t know about A&M but I think perhaps the rest of the list are reaches for you. Your UW GPA is low for those schools. SAT is ok, but even if your SAT is higher I doubt your chance will be better. These are public colleges and GPA is everything.

You really think UT and UTD are reaches??? :/

For the UCs, your scores are too low. You should be at 2200 for SAT and 34 ACT to be competitive for our California schools.

Additionally, the fact that you NOW live OOS precludes you from being considered for in-state status so you are looking at $55k to $60k per year in California. No financial aid for OOS students, no matter how good the scores are.

UT Austin and A&M Engineering are a reach (class rank not high enough so would be a review admit). Review admits with relatively lower test scores are tougher for engineering (transferring in may be doable - but have to be careful). Also their engineering majors fill early at both - apply as soon as you reasonably can (presumably after you have retaken SAT or ACT and gotten good scores back).

@2018RiceParent‌ but doesn’t a and m have a 63℅ acceptance rate??

@vs1997‌ Yes - its acceptance rate is high, but a large percentage are autoadmits (top 25% class rank with a 30 ACT, or top 10% with any test score). Engineering fills early as my son’s friends found out last year (although some review admits are let in to Engineering a few months later presumably after space frees up when some autoadmits turn down offers). Review admission may be possible - but it is annoying at UT and A&M due to popular majors filling, scheduling etc.

I like a lot of things about A&M - but I do find the idea of many feeling pressured to apply to A&M in September or October to get their major a little weird.

@2018RiceParent‌ yes, I am aware of the top quarter rule. I am planning to take care the SAT again in October and aim for a 2100, which I am positive I can do. Do you think mid October is too late?

Your extracurriculars are great for your intended major; the internship is really important, so try to find more opportunities like this! If you’re having trouble with standardized testing, you shouldn’t do both the ACT and the SAT. Choose one (I think the act is the better fit). Also retake your sat 2 tests, I don’t think it’s going to be to difficult because you already know what you did wrong. Your gpa will increase if you do well this year.
UT: low reach (would be reach but you’ve interned there)
Berkeley: reach because that school focuses a lot on academics
UCSD: high match probably

I was thinking of UT Austin.

@Dream0n‌ I don’t have time to retake subject tests. I am planning to retake the SAT reasoning with a goal of 2100 which is achievable for me.

@DrGoogle‌ oh okay. Do you think think I have a better chance with a 2100 or above SAT?
