chance me for UVA

-White, male, junior in high school

-Go to the most competitive and highest ranked high school in NC

-UW GPA will probably be a 3.6 (maybe 3.66) UW and a 4.47 W (maybe 4.5) by the end of this semester (GPA will probably will be the “weak point” of my application). However, I might take AP Macro or Micro online this summer to boost GPA.

-SAT currently isn’t great at about a 1900, but I haven’t studied for it yet and am studying hard for the May test (aiming for 2100 because I have been studying so much for the SAT)

-EC’s: 3 years of varsity swim/dive so far (won two state championships, was MVP freshman year, and was the captain this year), started my own charity club at my school where money is raised for organizations such as St. Jude Hospital and we volunteer at local events to benefit cancer research, currently a member of NHS and will be running for president during elections next month, 3 years of cross country so far, ambassador for my high school, a couple of small things like organ donation awareness club and BETA club

-Top 22% of class due to the fact that my high school is extremely competitive and is #1 in my state for academics

-Aiming to be NC scholar and AP Scholar with distinction

-There’s a downward trend in UW GPA and an upward trend in weighted, which is mostly due to my extremely rigorous course load. I have only gotten (or am getting) B’s in AP classes this year and one honors class, which is pre-calc (I loathe that class). The difficulty of my classes has increased throughout high school, especially junior year. I’m planning to take 9 AP’s by the time I graduate.

-Toured UVA and loved it. Applying to the engineering school for CS.

-Already thinking of essay ideas and I will make sure my essays are impeccable and thoroughly represent my personality by the time I submit my application. Can also get amazing teacher recommendations.

-Please give me my chances if my SAT score was around a 2100. I understand my current score isn’t good but I have never studied and am actually studying really hard for the upcoming test, which I am estimating to be around a 2100.

Thanks! Post links and I’ll chance back

Your gpa might hold you back, but try to get a SAT score of around 2150 to increase your chances.
Please chance me

I honestly think you have a great chance at UVA! Your ECs seem strong enough that you will be set apart in the pool. You’re right about your GPA and your not ideal test scores, but I think you can sell yourself based on your ECs and improving your test scores.

If you can get ur sat up I think you have a great shot! You’re gpa might be a problem but if it can be explained with your rigorous course load and highly competitive school it shouldn’t be a major factor. Good luck!
Chance me back please!

UVa: low reach-mid reach. Uva’s OOS admission has been very competitive. Not saying you are not qualified, but please know that UVa prioritizes its in state applicants and that there are many qualified OOS applicants like you. Try to get SAT 2200+ or ACT 33+
Do you have back up plans?

Yeah @paul2752 I’m also applying to NC State (in-state), VT, ole miss honors college, and the Alabama presidential scholarship (if I get my SAT up) as back ups.

Bring that SAT up to a 2100 and I think you have a good shot! Good luck. Chance back: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1753701-chance-me-ill-chance-back.html#latest

Bump. Got my ACT up to a 32 (34 english, 33 math, 32 reading, 30 science, 9 essay). Writing an essay that will really distinguish myself (talking about a super-unique talent of mine) and am asking my teachers for recs this week.

@agc1998 Hey - I’m currently a senior who got accepted and will be attending UVA next year. Perhaps I can give you some insight (But I’m in-state). I think you have a decent chance - not great, because you’re OOS. UVA’s acceptance rate out of state is much lower than their in-state acceptance. AP scholar with distinction itself doesn’t really matter, but your course load does. If you’re taking tough classes and getting As and Bs in them, that’s good. Last year I got a B- in AP U.S. History and still got in. I think your extracurriculars are decent. When a UVA admissions officer visited my high school, she said that UVA just wants to see that you “did something” in high school. Make sure that this summer is filled with meaningful experiences/internships if possible. For example, this past summer I bulked up my common app a ton because I wrote a research paper and did some work at the NIH. Prior to that, I didn’t have that many notable extras.

I could probably comment on some other stuff as well, so if you want to talk, message me.

I’m taking more AP classes than most people at my school; I will mostly have 8 AP’s under my belt by graduation. Also, I have a job as the head dive coach at a country club lined up for this summer. Im also trying to line up a huge 5k for my club that benefits Local Cancer hospitals. @mrwiggles

@agc1998 Those are decent ECs. Just make sure you are doing something meaningful this summer that you could put on your common app. I think you have about a 50/50 chance of getting in. Also i would suggest applying Early Action.

I hate to burst your bubble, but only our top, and I mean top, students got in this year from a nationally ranked New York high school. None of them ended up going which doesn’t bode well for next year’s applicants. Perhaps less kids apply from your state because UNC has the right mix of academics, location and sports for a state flagship. But if you were applying from New York, I would say to seriously look elsewhere.
