chance me for UVA?

I'm a junior; white female from northern VA (in state), wanting to enter field of comp sci <33333! :)

(Just as a disclaimer, I am not a stellar student by CC standards. I'm not aiming for the Ivies - I don't stand a chance. Okay with me. Critique away!)

Weighted GPA: ~4.22
Unweighted GPA: 3.85
Top 10% of Class
SATs: CR580 M680 W670 (I am an awful tester, but I plan to study next fall & hopefully raise each score up to the next hundred)
SAT IIs: (projected) US History >700 ; Math I >700 ; Math II >700 (I'll probably submit Math II over I)
ACT: 28
I've always taken the most rigorous courses available. I'll have taken all the available honors courses and eight of the available APs (World History (4), US History, Psychology, Statistics, Computer Science, Calc AB, Government, Language & Composition) before graduating. Have been a member of band (9-12), and have moved my way up to the highest symphony.

Honors Societies:
National Honor Society (11, 12)
Tri-M Music Honor Society (10, 11, 12)
Math Honor Society (12, I'm almost positive I'll get in)

Volunteer Hours:
Tri-M (music related): 25-30 hours
Math: 5 hours(?)
NHS (community service): ~20

FEA (tutored at elementary school): 30
Total: ~100 (I'm trying to get more here and there <3)

Extra Curriculars:
Cross Country (9, V10, 11, 12)
Track & Field (9, 10)
FEA (9, 10)
SADD (9, 10, 11, 12)

Work Experience:
Pottery Shop (a year)

Laser Tag Arena (a year and a half)

Awards:
Honorable Mention, Science Fair (tested effect of different sugars on yeast's metabolic rate)
Placed at an XC meet on our JV Girls' team (3rd place, '08)

(oh, and if it helps, I’m applying to the School of Arts & Sciences because I do not want to take a Physics or Chemistry subject test for the School of Engineering)

GPA is on par with UVA applicants though your SAT is a bit low
Also you don’t seem to have many leadership positions, which are vital to all applications, regardless the school

Get that SAT to above a 2050, and get some more leadership positions and you’re in.

As of now you are competitive seeing as you are in-state

You should re-take the SATs to try and score higher especially that Critical Reading score. At this point I am going to have to say it is a reach for you. I agree with Thispakistanigir, you definitely need some more leadership positions. Run for office for your grade or do FBLA and run to be an officer. Good Luck!

laurora…What do you do that you absolutely love and would not show up in the rest of your application? As an example, I know of a young lady who was admitted to UVA who had similar stats to you but she was fluent in a foreign language b/c she began learning it in school at the age of 6. By the time she was a senior and taking the AP Language course, she was like a native speaker. She used this as the topic of her essay and explained how she would use this language in the future. This would not have shown up on her application if she had not written about it. In other words, what sets you apart from all other applicants and is unique to you?

Does tutoring not count as a leadership position, or lifeguarding?

Honestly, I tried running for a class officer position but I was not elected. I lost to a really nice guy, which is actually okay with me because he’s great, but now I just do not have any particular positions. I am planning on becoming president of SADD next year (I think I have a good shot)

I mean positions can be created. Why not start a new club regarding a topic of your interest?

I’ve started three clubs, and considering the effort you put in and the vision you have, most people will elect you as officer. It doesn’t have to be a dictatorship:) Just do some cool stuff with it.

If you’re the head of MUN/Debate, “I increased membership by n% and took our team to n number of conferences this year winning n amount of awards”

Reach with your test scores. But, like others have mentioned, everything else looks great. I’m also in-state and the kids from my school who got in this year kind of surprised me. Don’t underestimate the power of applying in-state. Raise your SAT score to at least 1300 and I think you have a great chance.

Thanks for the input!
