THANKS!!!

What???

Ignore HoldTheMayo! He/she is a ■■■■■. I don’t think retaking the ACT is necessary with a 2280 SAT.

Yeah, I read some of his other posts, and I’m pretty sure you’re right. I personally don’t think a retest is necessary and that I should just use my SAT’s, but my mom said that Vanderbilt looks more at ACT??

You are a very reasonable candidate anywhere.

Some schools (Duke, etc.) are reaches for nearly anybody, but you have just as good a shot as anyone.

bump…

My D had about the same stats as you: 2250 SAT, 790 & 770 SAT II, 12 APs (all 5s), all As at very rigorous/reputable private prep school, etc. Her ECs were a bit better (please no offense…yours are very solid), and she had won a few more awards (ex: NM, Latin Exam Magna Cum Laude x 3 yrs, etc, etc.) She was WL at both Vandy and WUST. As for the ivys, she was WL at five, accepted at 0. Good/encouraging news, she did have some really good offers albeit not exactly what she had initially hoped for. She’s now very excited about matriculating to her new school this fall. My point is that your stats are good, and you have a shot; however, for the schools you’ve mentioned don’t think you’ll “for sure” get into one or more. Make certain to have some other match schools and one or two safeties. Good luck!

Yeah, I know my EC’s are lacking, mainly because I didn’t do anything freshman year. I’m not sure about NM yet (I know I’m at least commended) or about AP awards, so I didn’t include those, and my school stopped doing NLE after my sophomore year. But I can’t believe your daughter got WL with those stats, seeing as many people get in with like 2000 SAT’s, ho-hum extracurriculars, and no hooks. Thanks for the response. =)

bump bump bump

Just to be clear, just competing in something doesn’t necessarily indicate an honor or an award.

May want to add some leadership roles, btw.

Oops, I forgot to make that distinction. =P

Many do not get into these schools with a 2000 and ho hum ECs. That’s a myth. I would reconsider retaking the SAT, the 720CR will hurt at all of these schools and probably put the top among them out of reach. One plus you do have is being from TN which will be a boost.

If JC40’s child is from a well represented state, those results are typical and not surprising in the least.

Do you go to a good school? Do people get into top-tier/ivies in your school?

Actually, I did consider retesting, not because of the 720 CR, but because of the 770 MA; I really, really don’t think I can do much better on CR, but I think I almost certainly can in MA. But I think that for right now, it’s better for me to focus my energy elsewhere (I’m not really going for the upper Ivy Leagues… just wanted to know if I had any type of chance).

As for the 2000 SAT’s, ho hum EC’s, etc., I’ve seen it happen. Not with the highest ranked Ivies, but with some schools on the same level as the first few I listed. Knowing some of the people who WERE accepted into some of the colleges on the list, I’d say that jc40’s daughter’s results WERE surprising, no matter what state she’s from.

@geekorathletic:
what about qualifying for a national exam (such as USAMO or USNCO, etc.)?

I was a college counselor for 20 years, they’re NOT.

@WonTongTong It probably does not even compare to some of the schools in the NE states, but for the state of TN, I’d say I go to a really good school. This year was a pretty good year for seniors at my school: we had several get into Ivies. But usually, it’s just one or two.

@Redroses
I have heard of much worse candidates get into those schools (and they were not URM’s or anything like that). If what you’re saying is true, either those people got really, really lucky, or else being from TN really does give a great, great advantage.

I know my other Subject test scores now… 780 in Chem and 800 in Math II.

just curious, how does your school weight those grades?
like a 92 in an honors class is equal to what without extra points?
what about an ap class?
