Chance me for Vanderbilt ED I?

SAT Score: Math 660; Critical Reading 740; Writing 750

Although I will take the SAT once more in June, I am concerned that my math score is not high enough. I am aware, however, that the early decision applicant pool has lower SAT scores than that of the regular decision pool.

With a stellar application boasting leadership and academic excellence (all AP and honors courses), do you think these SAT scores will hinder my acceptance?

Leadership:
1) Captain of the Mock Trial team
2) Vice President of Scholarship of the National Honor Society
3) Chair of the Admissions Committee
4) Vice-Chair of Students Against Drunk Driving

Furthermore, my resume reflects a commitment to community service and I will be traveling to Peru this summer on a volunteer trip.

How are my chances thus far?

You don’t indicate your GPA.

Sorry! My GPA is 3.81 unweighted and 4.7 weighted.

You’ve got a chance but you certainly aren’t definitely in. Get that math score up for a better shot.

Do you think so even if I apply early decision one, indicating that I am definitely attending if they admit me? Of course I am trying to improve my score by taking the SAT again in June.

What are you marjoring in. When we visted for a Black and Gold days one of the admins said something along the lines of “if you are majoring in English we want to see top CR and Writing scores but care less about math. And if you are majoring in Engineering less emphsis is put on your Writing score.”

Ed is tricky at Vandy because, if you don’t get in, that’s it–no wait list, no moving on to regular decision. The pool is smaller, with lots of top quality applicants. But the admission rate is higher for ED so, if you are sure that Vandy is where you want to be, you’re probably better off trying it.

I think you have an above-average chance for ED I! Good luck!

Here’s info from the Vanderbilt Admissions blog on the students accepted for ED1 and ED2 in February 2012:

… a full 99 percent of the admitted ED students received one or more significant honors or held leadership positions while in high school. More specifically:

•A large portion held major leadership roles such as President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer or Founder of an organization. Many were also Athletic Team Captains or Co-Captains, or MVPs of their respective sports teams, which often placed in or won district, national or international-level championships.
•A significant number have already made an impact in the fine arts by holding leading roles in theatre productions, achieving state level musical awards, or serving as Youth Symphony Concertmasters or Drum Majors.
•Finally, an overwhelming number of our ED students achieved such high honors as Eagle Scout, Girl Scout Gold Award and AP Scholar, or have been inducted into honorary societies like the National Honor Society, National Beta Club or Key Club.
It’s also worth looking at the numbers, of course. Following is your statistical first glimpse at the Class of 2016 (EDI and II combined):

•Middle 50% SAT: 1380-1520
•Middle 50% ACT: 31-33
•Percent of students in the top ten percent of their graduating class: 90.05%**
•Average rank in class: 4.31%**
•Early Decision Admit Rate: 24.01%

Your SAT score of 1400 is above the 25% for last year’s ED class, and your leadership positions and community service make you sound like the well-rounded student that Vanderbilt is looking for. However, make sure to look at (and become excited about) several others schools in addition to Vandy. Admission is so competitive these days that no one is guaranteed a spot; in fact, many superb students are waitlisted or rejected each year.

Good luck!
