Hello everyone! Can you describe my chances for getting into the W&L Class of 2024 and getting the Johnson scholarship? You’ll notice my stats are not as perfect as I wanted them but my extracurricular are outstanding. I am in state.
Potential Politics major
— STATS —
SAT: 1410 combined (Math: 680 English: 730)
Did not take ACT
Weighted GPA: 4.3
Not sure what unweighted GPA is but I made all A’s through all of high school.
10 AP/IB classes
3 AP/IB Exams - 5 on AP GoPo and will take AP Stat and IB French in spring.
School does not rank, but I am at the top of my class because I was chosen to be an usher for graduation.
— EXTRACURRICULAR —
Forensics (Speech and Debate) State Champion with a special distinction of straight 1 rankings (very rare), team captain
Theatre (many plays, IB Theatre, Sports League play competitions - I did everything from lighting to acting to stage managing)
French (French Honor Society President, French Club, 5 years French classes)
National Honor Society
Student Ambassador (like a tour guide for new students)
Tennis for first two years of high school but left due to a serious injury. I always played top 6 though and lettered.
Regular decision so that I can compare my other options financial aid wise. I was very reluctant to apply to anything binding just because I wouldn’t have much control over what I pay.
Do you think my SAT is too low for admission at all, or just too low for the Johnson scholarship? I do have the speech and debate state championship, but I wasn’t sure how heavily they value extra curricular activities.
You will probably get in if you show demonstrated interest, but I doubt you will get merit aid. W&L offers very little. It is a school that meets all unmet needs, but I am not sure exactly what that means as we won’t be eligible for any.
I disagree that W&L offers very little merit aid. The Johnson is a full ride merit scholarship offered to about 10% of the incoming class. My D took it as the best merit offer she received, and she received a fair few great offers.
My daughter got the Johnson. One of her high school friends also was admitted and did not receive it; however, the amount of financial aid she was offered was incredible. I guess that was not “merit” per se, but she was an outstanding candidate. Her family isn’t “poor” – two middle-income parents.
