Chance me for Wellesley ED?

Hi everyone! I'll be applying to Wellesley Early Decision this coming November.
Some background: I currently attend a magnet high school with a focus on media/communications. There is a very competitive application process to get in.

GPA: 93.88 (our grades aren't weighted and we don't use a 4.0 scale)

SAT: 2110/1430
CR: 760
Math: 670
Writing: 680

SAT Lit: 730

ACT: 32 composite, 32 English/Writing
English: 36
Reading: 33
Math: 28
Science: 29

I only took the ACT once and may take it again.

ECs:
I've been racing soap-box derby cars since I was 7 year old and am nationally ranked, have been in national/international championships multiple times. I use my car as a platform to raise money for autism awareness and programs for autistic children in my hometown. So far I've raised $28,000.

SkillsUSA state officer since sophomore year, youngest ever when elected (SkillsUSA is an organization that facilitates competitions for students in career academies such as my own as well as vocational/technical schools. As a state officer I travel to help promote CTE and emphasize its importance at state conferences, have given speeches to senators and other government officials on the topic.)
Silver medal in state SkillsUSA extemporaneous speaking competition, went on to compete at the national level.

Note, one of my letters of rec will be from a teacher who graduated from Wellesley.

My main concern stems from my transcript. For the most part my school doesn't offer AP classes, banking on the fact that all courses are taught at an honors level. AP Calc was added for this coming year, but since math isn't my strong suit and the Calc course I'll be taking instead will give me Seton Hall credits, I chose not to take it. I also won't be taking any language next year; my school only offers Spanish, which is routinely my worst subject, and I was afraid Spanish 5 would drive down my GPA. I took Spanish 4 last year, again given Seton Hall credits (the course actually counted for Seton Hall's Spanish 201 and 202), and I'm hoping that will suffice.

I believe I'll be applying as a Computer Science major... I'm still rather undecided but I fell in love with the subject through the courses I've taken. I may not be a typical STEM lover, but I see CS as more of a puzzle and I've really excelled in it so far. I'm also a very outgoing person, and feel as if that will help me advance quickly in the CS field. Not sure if that will help or hurt, given the fact that my math scores aren't the strongest.

Thank you for chancing me! Any advice would also be appreciated.

Oh, I also have a job working 20ish hours a week at a local pharmacy/convenience store, if that helps.

I’d say you have a good shot, so probably match to high match. Isn’t CS a popular major as well though? Plus, you seem like a strong English language student rather than a science student… Not sure if it suits you, but it can’t be wrong as long as you like it. I would recommend strengthening your math if you want to do CS major though.

Thank you! CS is a mid-size to small department at Wellesley, actually. I’ve sat in on a CS class there and spoken about it extensively with students in the major. I do adore English, however I’m disappointed in the prospective job market for the field. Plus I’m just a very tech-savvy person and excelled in the Java courses I’ve taken through my school. Time will tell as to what I end up choosing.

Anyone else, please? I’ll chance back!

Majors don’t matter. I applied as a CS major and got accepted, but the first year and the second we have to enroll in the liberal arts and science program instead of the major we signed up for. And two years later we can choose our majors freely. So majors don’t affect your acceptance whatsoever. And yes. I think you have a great shot as well. And if you’re not taking the SAT in Oct, luck is the only thing you need right now. Oh, and an essay that can really show your woman power! So… Good luck!

That’s great! Thank you so, so much! I’m only planning on taking the US History SAT II in October, which I won’t submit to most schools if I don’t do well on it. We’ll see!

huefan, are you sure that the academic interest of a prospective student plays no role in admissions decisions? I understand that students are accepted into the college as a whole rather than a particular major and that the student doesn’t declare a major until later. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that the admissions office doesn’t take anticipated major into account.

If, for example, the school is interested in growing the Physics department, it seems like the admissions staff might take note of a prospective student’s intention to major in Physics.

I think you sound like a good candidate.

Well, if I were on the Ad Comm, I’d let you in. Write your essay about soap-box derby racing–that should be an interesting read.

Thank you so much! Massmomm, that’s the plan. I currently have multiple drafts of essays about racing, I just have to work on making it as perfect as possible.

yotommy, eh…actually I’m not sure. But if there is one thing I’ve learnt in the past application year, things are so complicated that the only thing my simple mind can attribute my failures to is bad luck… But by your logic, I’m pretty sure computer science department is a rapidly growing one. So there grows nma716’s chance in getting in~

I think you have a good chance!! I’d say there’s a 70% chance you’ll get in. Good luck
