Chance me for Wharton ED and you'll be automagically smart. Maybe.

Hey guys, I'm a senior and I'd like to get your opinions on my chances at Wharton for ED.

School: Top 5 in the nation for STEM. #1 in the state.

Background: Albanian from Kosovo. Moved here due to genocide and war.

Hooks: First generation college(?)

GPA: 4.1 (out of 4.25) weighted. School doesn't report unweighted, but I'd say its about 3.9.
SAT: 2240 Composite - 1540 CR/M (780 CR, 760 M, 700 Wr)
SAT II: 800 Math 2, 800 Literature, 730 Biology
AP: AP Lang (5), AP Biology (5), Not reporting AP Calc AB or Chem. (Will have taken 10 by the time I graduate).

Senior Schedule:

AP Calc BC
AP Stat
AP Literature
AP Macro and Micro Econ
AP US Gov't
Honors Physics
Honors Spanish IV

EC's:

Economic Research: A friend and I are working with a professor (who's also a Wharton grad) on an economics business paper regarding opaque pricing. We plan to submit this business model to the company it pertains to.

Tech Writer (Personal) - I have my own personal technology website that I write editorials and long-form articles on. I get approximately 2,000 unique visitors a month. This takes up the bulk of my time.

Tech Writer (Large-Scale) - Recently I was offered a position to write for a very popular tech site (on the order of 3.5 million unique visitors a month), which completely shocked me when I got the email. My first article is coming soon.

Business Professionals of America - Business club that I founded and am the president of.

Jefferson Awards Council - Nationally recognized program dealing with service. Requires application at our school.

Model UN - Speaks for itself.

Translator - This isn't really a traditional EC, but an admissions officer at Harvard told me that one person that got accepted there had this on their transcript. My parents don't speak English well, so I act as the family translator. I write emails, letters, notes, take calls, etc. This might seem easy, but it really takes some time.

Volunteering - 50+ hours at a local hospice.

Awards:

Common Wealth Award Writing Contest - Very prestigious, and I got to meet Madeleine Albright!
Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony Award Nominee
COMAP Math Modeling - Meritorious Award
M3 Math Modeling - Meritorious Award
4th Place at Personal Finance Challenge
Windows on Williams (doubt this will help though)

Teacher Recs: Should be really good. One is from an AP English teacher and one will either be from a Chem teacher or Econ/BPA teacher. Also, my counselor told me she is writing a really great rec for me, and she knows me very well. I might get a rec from the professor I'm doing research with.

Essays: I, personally, love my essay. Its both heart-wrenching (how my family escaped genocide, refugee camps, etc.) and also funny and interestingly tied to tech writing (how it was a struggle to make a name for myself). It ties together well, and for what its worth, a similar format has garnered several awards for me.

Thats it though. I'd really appreciate an honest answer. If its not positive, no problem. I'll take all the advice I can get.

Oh, and can you chance me for these other schools (Regular Decision)

Harvard
Stanford
Columbia
Cornell
Duke
Georgetown
NYU Stern
Williams (will Windows on Williams help?)

Thanks in advance!

Anyone???

First of, your GPA is slightly below average but your SAT and a great essay cold make up for that. Also your EC’s are below average. But see if you can get that Wharton grad to write you a letter of recommendation. Those awards and background should give you a little boost above the competition and overall I’d say you got a solid chance at Wharton ED.

Thanks for the insight. I really appreciate it. Do you really think my ECs are weak though? Tech writing takes up the bulk of my time, and I believe I’ve made considerable progress in attaining a job at that popular site (3.5 million viewers is nothing to scoff at). Also, my research is pretty substantial as well. And then there’s everything else.

More opinions are welcome, especially on ECs and the other schools.
