Chance me for Wharton - Virtually no ECs but Alaska hook

Asian (Filipino)

Living in Alaska

Top 2% of my class (graduating class is around 450 students, ranked 5th of out 459)

4.0 GPA freshman year, 4.16 GPA sophomore year, expecting 4.66 junior year and 4.5 senior year (I'm going to maintain straight A's, which would lead to a 4.33 cumulative GPA and hopefully valedictorian)

4.0 unweighted GPA

Took 1 AP class (US History) last year, taking 4 (Spanish, Econ, Lang, Chem) next year and 3 (Stats, Calc, Psych) my senior year

Key Club (2 years projected)

National Honor Society (3 years projected)

Yearbook editor (also doubled as the financial manager, handled our budget)

Varsity football (2 years as a junior and senior, probably will make captain senior year)

Haven't taken SATs and ACTs yet, but expecting to get around 2200 and 34 on them

I probably will apply just for the hell of it, if I get admitted I will be pleasantly surprised and accept on the spot.

bumpbumpbump

Do you believe your predictions of 2200/34 are accurate? I.e. have you taken practice tests on which you achieved similar scores?

Yeah I took the PSAT as a sophomore and got a 226 (80 CR, 76 W, and 70 M)

No, you probably won’t get in, but you may have a better shot if you get recruited for a sport.

Haha, I’m 5’6 and 180 I don’t think I’ll be on the Quakers football team. Oh well, I’ll still throw in an application anyway.

Definitely apply! It’s a bit early to give you a relative chance though. Coming from an underrepresented state gives you a certain boost, but not a large enough one to counter your lack of ECs. You have plenty of time to flesh those out though.

Yeah, thing is I would hate to do something I’m not interested in just to pad my stats. Not really big on community service, and there aren’t a lot of big competitions up here in Anchorage

Class rank is good. I do not know whether Filipinos are considered ORMs, so I will take you to have no hooks whatsoever. Also, I do not think Alaska can be considered that big of a hook (maybe 5% chance boost at most).

You’re taking 8 APs, which is a decent amount. Your ECs are typical of an applicant, but lacking in amount and leadership to some extent. You do not seem to show any passion for Business, other than your financial manager role which isn’t that big considering you are applying to Wharton) or wanting to learn business in your ECs and you do not have any SAT II scores on which basis I can chance.

I will say this though. If you get your 2200 (provided 770+ in the Math section), and 750+ in both SAT IIs (one of which is Math II) then you will have average chances.

Thanks man. I took the US History Sat II and I got a 760 on that. Not really many opportunities to do business related work here, I’ve been looking everywhere for a job shadow opportunity or an internship. Thanks though

I don’t think you necessarily need to do business related extracurriculars. Also, for only being a sophomore your ECs aren’t that bad. Could you become editor-in-chief of your yearbook? That’d be a pretty good one, and is almost sort of “businessy” in a sense (running the yearbook is tough and requires a lot of managing, not unlike running a business). Key club an NHS always come off as sort of eh ECs I think. But try and lead them anyway. Why don’t you found a school club or organization or something? Or is there another club you could join and then lead in your school? There has to be something that interests you.

I’m in line for editor in chief my senior year. My interests are football, business, philosophy, psychology and social media. I don’t know of any clubs that I can create out of those.

You forget that Sarah Palin is from Alaska.

What does that have to do with anything?

Well, it raises the question: how likely is it that you’ll quit halfway through your first term?

You’re ■■■■■■■■.
