From what I’ve heard about other people who were accepted, W&M is just as holistic as they advertise, so nobody can say for sure whether or not you’ll get in. I’d say that as long as you don’t royally screw up the essay you’ve got an excellent chance

W&M wants people who are going to save the world - make sure that they can draw the conclusion from your essay that you will be one of the world saviors. Convince them of that and they will role out the red carpet. Too many people apply like you - perfect GPA, high test scores, good sports. If you come from an economically challenged background sell them how you overcome obstacles. You are selling yourself so be ready to do that … Good luck!

@Eniam666, I think your prospects look very strong. Your GPA and curriculum are excellent, and your SAT math is above the 75th percentile, while your writing is within the 25th/75th (probably at about the 60th percentile, per the common data set). Your ECs are impressive, especially being your class president (congrats!). Two things jump out to me as unique achievements - your cycling trips and being a self-taught composer. I would think that an essay that discusses what you find fulfilling, and have learned, from either of these would set you apart from students with more garden-variety ECs. You could certainly talk about both in your essay, or maybe even all your ECs, but you want the essay to say something specific about you and the perspective you can bring to the W&M community.

The only shortcoming I see is the SAT reading score, which is 10 points below W&M’s 25th percentile. Is that a glitch, or does it reflect that you are much stronger at math than at reading? Have you thought about retaking after some CR practice?

W&M welcomes students who want to change the world, of course, but it doesn’t expect that from every applicant. One of my daughters who attended wrote her essay about a bad haircut, and one wrote about the hazards of standing too close to the stage during a Shakespearean play. OP, let the essay show who you are.

Essays are the most important factor of the admission process for William and Mary. I know people who were top 1 percent of their class and got rejected because their essays were too generic and bland. Just spend time on your essays.

Thanks! @frazzled1 @geloppyzodiac

Just a quick point of clarification, essays are one part of many in our process. They are no more or less important than any other application component. Like any other part, they can make you a more or less competitive applicant but they alone to not determine the decision we make.

Thank you, @W&M Admission. It is always nice to hear the actual opinion of admissions offices.
