WUSTL: Reach

@Catria Thanks! Is there any way i can help my chances? ED wouldn’t help?Or any high match/match school suggestions? I live in Florida, and am applying to UF as well.

The reason is because

 1. your GPA is low (relatively)
 2. Eh EC’s-- too all over the place.

It’s not a high reach though. high match-low reach. Catria doesn’t seem to know what he/she is talking about

To make WUSTL ED a non-reach (in this context it means high match) one needs to demonstrate interest…

The GPA is a little low, the SAT is average-above average, and your courses seem rigorous. I would say WUSTL is a high match/low reach because of how selective it is. All you can do now is keep your grades up for the rest of Junior Year and Senior Year, and write a killer essay. If you do all of that, your chances will increase.

Chance back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1652577-chance-me.html#latest</a></p>

@noel597‌ Gotcha gotcha. Could you explain how my EC’s are all over the place? Most of my strong EC’s are in the math/science area. Not saying you’re wrong, just want a little explanation
@Catria‌ Well, I went to this seminar where a college representative from WUSTL was present. I asked a few questions, but that’s about it. I have no way of visiting though until this summer :frowning:
@PMoney1‌ Thanks! Chancing back now

@spiritkoi I think you definitely have relatively high chances, especially if you’re going ED. However, is there any way you could raise your GPA? It seems to be your only weak point.
Also, I have to disagree with the statement that you ECs are ‘‘all over the place’’. I’m a firm believer that students should pursue ECs that they are passionate about, and if you’re passionate about a wider range of activities that can’t do you any harm. If anything, it could show that you’re willing to expand your horizons. While it is nice to see, say, a potential physics major whose HS ECs were only about physics, astronomy, etc, there’s not much of a difference. So long as you’ve shown dedication, it’s alright. If you get worried about the ECs, find a way to link your wide range to your essay. Or even talk about some EC in your essay in a really passionate and gripping way! :)

Chance back please? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1653114-chance-me-top-lacs-nyu-northwestern-etc.html#latest</a></p>

@Someone007‌ Thanks! And yes, my 2nd semester GPA is set right now at 5 A’s, and one grade that i am unsure about. So that will raise it, idk how much though. And if they want my mid-year reports for senior year, I think those will be higher than a 3.6 as well. Thanks so much for the encouraging advice regarding my EC’s! I hope to mention them in an essay.

I don’t see why you can’t try for WUSTL if that is where you are really committed to going and you can afford it. however, the ED route does commit you to that school before you know about your financial aid package. You should definitely go visit the school first though.

I am not too fond of ED applications. I think students should give themselves several choices and be able to consider the totality of the decision, including visiting a number of different schools and seeing the financial aid packages that are available to them.

I really do like WUSTL, one of my good friends goes there and gushes over it. I will make a more concrete decision when I visit over the summer, and how much financial aid i would get, so i’m not set in stone about ED here. I just wanted to see how i’d fare if i did! Thank you for your advice and opinion; i will definitely consider it.

Sometimes ED increases your chances at a particular school, but sometimes it does not. The ONLY time you should choose to apply ED is if you are totally certain that the college is your first choice, AND that you can afford to attend that school.

My recommendation is that you learn as much as possible about WUSTL – which is one of my favorite universities – and visit (maybe twice) and write a killer essay on why you think WUSTL is a great fit for you. If you do not know enough about WUSTL to write a killer essay then you won’t know enough to apply ED.

More advice: don’t worry about your EC’s. They reflect your personality. If WUSTL does not like them, well maybe it is not the right college for you. Personally, your EC’s look great to me.

Other colleges to consider: Tulane, Vanderbilt, and Emory. All are closer to Florida and all are excellent.

Definitely! I just wanted some opinions. I’ll have a better idea after i visit schools this summer! I’m definitely considering Vanderbilt and Emory, although i dont know if i like the scene at Vanderbilt :stuck_out_tongue: Thanks!
