Chance me for Yale please :)

Hi, I'm a rising senior, and my absolute dream school would be Yale, but nothing about me really stands out. I want to apply scea, but if I don't have much of a chance, I don't want to waste an early, and would much rather apply UPenn ED. Here are my stats; I would love to hear some advice!

SAT: 2310 (one sitting M: 800 CR: 760 W:750)

SAT II: 790 Math, 710 Physics (Yeah, I'm retaking...)

Unweighted GPA: 3.88 (I know this is kind of low; my GPA dropped sophomore year, and I got 2 B's first semester junior year, but I pulled off all A's second semester, so hopefully thats an upward trend)
Weighted GPA: 4.561
Rank: 6/650, but class rank is no longer on our transcript :(
AP Classes: Physics (5), Computer Science (5), Art History (5), Euro (5)
Waiting on stats, calc, enviro, comp and us gov, and lang
Major Awards: None really. Almost 100% sure I got NMSF, and AP scholar?

EC's: Science Olympiad (1 Year; President, Founder), Mock Trial (1 Year; Co-Captain), Speech and Debate (3 Years; Public Forum VP); NHS (1 year), Young Liberals Club (2 Years), STUCO (1 Year)

Summer Activites: Went to Europe for 2 weeks, Harvard People to People Leadership Camp, Missouri Innovation Academy (among 25 chosen in state), lab research at WashU for one summer, now researching at Danforth Plant Science Center, debate camp 2 summers, Also owns a small store on Etsy :D
Gender: Female
Ethnicity: Asian :(
Income Bracket: >200,000
State: Missouri (does this help in any way?)
School: Pretty competitive public; over 2500 students
Intended Major: Probably math or economics

Any thoughts? Any infi would be appreciated...thanks!

You can apply early to Upenn or Yale. You have a chance at either, none really better than the other.

Go for Yale early decision. Your SAT scores are there and you have nothing to lose. And you will end up regretting not applying to Yale. I think you could get into UPenn without the early decision anyways.

^thanks for your reply

And if you guys have time, could you tell me if these are matches or reaches etc.?

Yale
Upenn
Princeton
UCBerkley
Stanford
UChicago
Washington University STL (I live in the region, if it helps)
Dartmouth
Vanderbilt

Academically speaking, not weak but not very strong either. Standardized tests are ok but not stellar and same goes with gpa/class rank. I’m surprised that 3.88 uw still puts you as 6th/650 which is a fairly decent class rank.

ECs are alright, with demonstrated leadership though they aren’t outstanding. Yale’s a tough one to crack and it’s not out of range, but it’s still a reach. (Btw SCEA doesn’t give much of an edge) but if Yale is your dream, go for it. You wouldn’t want to lock yourself in Penn (which I could almost say you’d be in ED) never knowing whether you could have gone to Yale.

Yale, Princeton, Stanford - Reaches (Not very likely but a chance nonetheless)
Penn, Chicago, Dartmouth - Lower Reaches (I feel you could get at least one of these RD)
UCB, WashU, Vanderbilt - High Matches

Thanks for your input! I just want to give it a shot, and not leave myself wondering for the rest of my life whether or not I could’ve gotten in…

Do you think I have a relatively good shot at Penn RD?

Also, I forgot to add: I’m submitting an art supplement. I’ve been painting for 10 years now with a private teacher, and I would say my skills are pretty strong. I’m probably going to submit a few of my pieces along with my application. I don’t know if this would boost anything by much?

Going for RD vs ED at Penn is a lot less certain and it gets a lot more random but I’d feel comfortable saying that you’d have a relatively good shot at Penn RD. But because of the randomness, I could not say with nearly the same certainty that you’d be in RD as I could say you’re in if you went for ED. If not Penn I think others could pull through (though I know Penn is your next top choice). I would add a school like Duke to your list in order to increase your odds of netting a top school if it all comes down to the RD results.

Also what do you plan to major in? Penn has the dual-degrees like lsm which, if you’re interested, I would highly recommend EDing to as they’re great programs and it’s much easier to get in ED.

Oh ok. Gahhh I don’t know which one to chooosee.

I kind of want to go into finance and investment type stuff, maybe on Wall Street…that would be awesome. But I’m not 100% certain; I just recently made this choice, because my parents have been pushing med ever since I was a fetus, so this is a big change. It would kind of explain my sciency ecs, so Wharton probs isn’t going to want me, but if I get into CAS, I might transfer later.

I’m thinking about maybe majoring in economics and maybe math or bio, but those two are offered only at cas, so I’m a little confused as to how that would work out…

Yale. If only you loved me…

[Life Sciences and Management at the University of Pennsylvania](<a href=“Home | Penn Life Sciences & Management Program”>Home | Penn Life Sciences & Management Program)

Honestly, I would really look into it; you get a degree in bio from cas and a degree in economics from wharton. You can still choose to go for pre-med, but at the same time, you’ll have job offers upon job offers if you want to work in consulting or finance. You can choose to only ED to the program so you don’t have to lock yourself in Penn if you don’t get in. Chances would be much higher if you went for ED to the program vs RD.

Oh, that sounds really good. What do you mean by ED to the program? Is there a difference between that and just regular ED? I’m a little new to the process…

In the Early Decision round you can choose to just apply to the lsm program and if you don’t get in, you can push off applying to Penn for a single-degree program in Wharton or CAS until the regular decision round so you can still apply to Yale for regular decision.

ED would be a significant boost because Penn tries to fill half their spots in the Early Decision round, including for the dual-degree programs, and the pool is a lot less competitive because it doesn’t include the HYP SCEAers as well as other very qualified applicants who don’t want to lock themselves in anywhere.

Of course, you won’t ever know if you could have gone to Yale if you get into the program ED, but the opportunities from the program are arguably better than the opportunities at Yale so it might be something you’d have to be willing to sacrifice.

Oh gotcha. I’m leaning towards Penn now…

Thanks for all your help!
