What state are you in?

Your chances look a bit grim at the moment- your GPA and SAT are below the bar. If you don’t have any extracurriculars other than those listed, hope for an acceptance, but brace yourself for a rejection.

Also, is your research published with a professor from a top-tier institution?

@puzzled123‌ I’d actually rather not say which state, due to privacy reasons. But, why would you say that my chances are grim? I thought my GPA and SAT fell only slightly below the middle 50%.

And no, my research isn’t published. However, I am looking to submit it to a supply chain magazine or the like.

Is there any way at all to improve my chances?

Unfortunately, the average SAT/GPA for your income level/race will be much higher. Yale will consider your academic accomplishments in the context of your background, so a 2350+ and 4.0 would put you at a much better chance.

However, many people with 2350s and 4.0s are rejected from Yale. Extracurriculars need to be strong, and based on what you presented, your ECs have nothing admission worthy. I think your best extracurricular is “Science Research, Engineering and IT Internships”, and unfortunately, Yale engineering sucks. (Why do you want to go to Yale in the first place?)

@puzzled123‌ I thought having an SAT score only 100 points lower and a GPA only 0.2 points lower could be made up for by having really focused, dedicated EC activities.

I actually am looking to major in Economics and Computer Science. While the latter is still catching up, I was under the impression that Economics at Yale is top-notch. Also, I found that I fit in really well in the Yale environment.

@sirswish7‌

Econ + CS = you looking to do quant?

btw, Yale CS is a total of around 30 students, so it is very small. Mostly ppl in CS are doing applied mathematics. If you really want a Econ/CS combo, Princeton would be a better option.

Perhaps I misjudged your ECs- they could be good if you have real depth. A few questions:

 • For DECA, did you go to ICDC? Did you get a top 10 finish in your event? Have your brought up your school’s national performance?
 • Were you paid for your internships? Did you create any products from scratch? Did you work with any notable faculty on your research?
 • Are you recognized on the state, national, or international level in Karate?

I’m looking to go into consulting or entrepreneurship! I feel like I’d like ORFE at Princeton, but I like the social environment at Yale so so much better. Residential colleges and all that.

What would they take someone ranked 28 instead of someone ranked #2. If you can answer that question well, you have a shot at Yale.

Score is average, but your ECs and awards are lackluster to say the least. I would focus on other top-tier schools besides the Ivies unless you radically pull up your scores and broaden your ECs.

@viphan Why do you believe that I need to radically pull up my scores? I thought 2260 was supposed to be a good score. Or should I submit my ACT score (34 Composite - 35 Math, 35 Reading, 34 English, 33 Science)?

It is an awesome score. But Yale among others is known to reject applicants who have perfect 4.0 and 2400.

And Yale probably does accept some kids with 3.8 and 2260, right??

around 4-5% of them

Look @sirswish7‌, I’m just trying to inform you of their harsh standards. You can’t be complacent. Yes, they accept kids from that range, but if the kids of 2400/4.0 are getting rejected, what makes you think you are getting in? (Not that you won’t but you should reason with yourself)
