ncstatefan97 – I would say put your best foot forward and apply for sure. You’ve got stats that appear to be in the median range. You make no mention of your class rank, or your intended major. Those can play into your chances as well.

I assume your rank is pretty decent, given your good GPA figures. NC State admission decisions weigh most heavily 4 areas – rigor of HS course load, GPA, class rank and SAT/ACT. Your SAT Math and Writing are slightly higher than the median (good!), but I would encourage you to give the SAT one more try in October. Focus your prep on polishing the Reading to get as close to 600 as possible. (which was the median for Writing section last year).

Also, your intended major can impact the competition you find yourself up against. Not to slight anyone, but the fact is some majors are more competitive than others. For example, Engineering and Natural Resources applicants are going to have a different profile due to supply and demand, and the rigor of the schedules that those typical students took in high school. Good luck!

Thanks! @klinger I plan on applying for Chemistry as my first choice, I’m in the top 10% of my class, and a rigorous courseload (20 Honors courses, 5 AP courses)

You have a great GPA and class rank, and I think if you bump up your reading score a little bit, you are a shoe-in! But even then, you have a good chance especially since you aren’t applying to engineering. Good luck on the November SAT and your application process.

Just retook the SAT. Idk if my CR will be better (it may be better, or it may not be better), but I really worked hard and now I think my math could potentially be 750-800. I was extremely careful with the wording on this section and I knew how to solve every single question. If I did get a 750-800 math, but only a 520 CR, would my chances go way down? My combined M+CR would be close to 1300

My first choice major is Applied Mathematics, second is FYC

You have a really nice chance of getting in with your GPA and class rank. I wouldn’t worry about the SAT too much; if you got your cr higher it would be great, but your M+CR is already close to the 75th percentile of admitted students.

For your question on how to improve your app, make sure to answer the short answer questions. They really help!

@luxyve I applied for the November 1st deadline, and I filled out the short answers as well as submitted a personal statement. Also, I changed my major from Chemistry to Applied Mathematics! Thanks!
