Chance Me: Georgetown

Just wondering if I should even have any hope of getting into my dream school… I will be applying as a Biology major (pre-med) with a plan of declaring as Biology of Global Health sophomore year.

  • Unweighted GPA: 4.0 Weighted GPA: 4.46 (Honors classes are unweighted)
  • I will have taken a total of 11 APs, with 5 of them being in this coming year. (APUSH, Microecon, Macroecon, Seminar, Psychology, Biology, Chemistry, Calc AB, Stats, Research, and Lang)
  • Officer of Junior Class Cabinet (elected position and plan/expect to have same position senior year)
  • 4 years of Cross Country
  • 3 years in HOSA with a leadership position senior year
  • ACT 33 (taking it again in October) Math: 34, Reading: 35, English: 32, Science: 32
  • National Honor Society & AP Scholar with Distinction
  • Freshman year I went to a specialized STEM program during part of the school day and was able to do my own research projects.
  • Held part time job since sophomore year working 15-20 hours/week
  • Volunteered last summer at a local free clinic but was unable to continue this year due to COVID
  • I also have a lot of other service with my church
  • Freshman mentorship/ student ambassador program (junior/senior year)
  • Princinpal’s Advisory & Leadership group (junior/senior year)
  • Expect strong rec letters from a science teacher who has had me multiple years and a second teacher who knows me well.

Let me know if what you think and any helpful hints anyone has for the Georgetown application/interview process!! Thanks in advance

You have a strong application and, while it is a reach for anybody, you are extremely competitive.

My question is why Georgetown for Biology at Georgetown? that’s not what it is known for.

Also - finances? In general, students who are thinking of medical are advised to go for a cheaper route, since medical school is expensive, so starting medical school already in debt is not a good idea.

In general, the conventional wisdom on CC is that a person who wants to go to medical school should attend a solid school which is cheap, since GPA matters more for medical school than the prestige of the undergraduate college. Attending a college with grade deflation is therefore not a good idea.

The other poster is right about your chances of getting in-you have a good application but it’s not a guarantee for anyone. Make sure you can answer “Why Georgetown” well in essays/interviews, it’s not obvious from your profile but that doesn’t mean you can’t have a great answer. Tell Georgetown why they are your dream school.

No, Georgetown is not the most known for sciences but there are lots of people who do Pre-Med here, and there is no grade deflation, in most classes the median grade will be an A, A-, or B+.

Thanks so much for the feedback! Since I am not set on medical school (also looking at potentially going into public health/health policy and maybe getting my MPH eventually) I thought that the Biology of Global Health major would be a good bet for either route depending on what I decide on down the line. I also think that Georgetown is in a good location for internships in the public health arena, and also has study abroad programs that really caught my interest. Obviously there are other cheaper options with programs that match my interests, but I really was just curious as to whether I had a chance. Thanks again for the help, especially the GPA deflation tip!
