Chance me Georgia Tech

Hello, I am new to the form and would like to ask for all of your opinion concerning my chances of getting accepted into Georgia Tech. My hook is my background as I am a Hispanic student (mother immigrated here from Peru) whose first learned language was Spanish. I feel that my heritage adds a unique element to my application (just my humble opinion) as it qualifies me as a URM and has been a large element of my life, given that I grew up in a Spanish speaking household and only learned English once I started going to school (I started at the pre-k level). I intend on majoring in either Biology or Biochemistry as a pre-med. Anyways, as far as numbers are concerned, here goes (I am currently a HS senior):

SAT Single Sitting (New): 1400/1600 (Math: 710 Reading and Writing: 690)
Essay Score: 8-8-8
SAT Subject Tests: Math 2: 670 Chem: 650 US History: 750

AP Exams: US History: 5 Chemistry: 3 (I will be taking the AP Calc BC, AP Physics C, and AP Spanish Lang exams at the end of my senior year)

Weighted GPA: 4.00 (95 on the 0-100 scale)

Honors: High Honors each marking period up until the end of my junior year (senior semester has just begun)

AP Courses: AP US I, AP US II, AP Chem, AP Physics C, AP Spanish

Honors Courses: (I do realize that honors courses are not a regulated curriculum in the way that AP is, but here is the list anyways) Geometry Honors, Pre-Calc Honors

Volunteer Work: Park cleanup, tutoring, food kitchen, taught English for a week to a small school district in Peru (I did this thanks to a connection I have with one of the district’s administrators)

Extracurriculars and Misc.: Politics Club Member, Red Cross club member, Lab Assistant for my AP Chem teacher, Flight Simulation Club (this as been a lifelong passion/hobby of mine), participated in a CNN interview in which the anchor was to interview students about their political views on this election (I was one of the 10 students recommended to be interviewed in a school of 800). Fluent in Spanish

If you have any questions concerning my application, please let me know. Also, I have done quite extensive research on the school and it does look like a bit of a reach for me, but I would still like to hear an opinion from a third party. Thanks

Borderline. Meaning that you’re a strong student but not a standout student for GA Tech…meaning you might get in, you might not. What’s your unweighted GPA?

Thanks for the reply! My unweighted GPA is 93.84, which, at my school, still classifies as a 4.0 average (93-96 is what falls into the 4.0 range). As indicated before, this bumps up to a 95 according to our weighting system, but I’m not sure how Tech adds weight to AP classes. I intend on taking the SAT once more (I just took my second one today, meaning that I’ll have 3 SAT scores by the end of November), so hopefully my superscored SAT will further my chances of acceptance. I plan on applying EA to Tech (they affirm on their site that they’ll still accept the November SAT for EA).

In state or OOS? Male or female? Legal or undocumented?

Out of state (NJ), male, and legal. I was born in North Carolina, but nonetheless brought up in a Spanish household (my parents divorced shortly after I turned 5, so my Peruvian grandmother played a large role in raising me as well since I lived with my mother afterwards while she went to school. My father immigrated from Slovenia).

Here’s what I"d do – take the SAT again, really work on your application, apply with enthusiasm and optimism…but have good safeties in place.

OOS admissions rate last year was about 23%

Thanks for the help guys. From what you’ve all said, it seems that Tech is a bit of a reach, but is nonetheless worth a shot. I was also considering the University of Miami and UCSB and UCSD (I have safety schools planned but I won’t bother asking about them). From what I have researched, it seems that UCSB and U Miami are within my range, with UCSD being more of a reach, as is the case with Tech. Any thoughts?

Calif schools wont give FA to out of state students. Have you researched this?

Yes, I’m aware of that. It is for that reason that I was leaning more towards other schools, but I didn’t rule the UC’s out entirely despite the fact that I’d be paying full OOS tuition
