Chance me getting into UW-Madison

Hey everyone. I’m currently a junior whose only dream is to go to UW-Madison. Cheesy, yes.

My current GPA is 3.83. Unweighted gpa isn’t too far behind. I’m currently taking one AP class right now. My current class rank is 14 out of 150 students.

I do A LOT of clubs.

Freshman year:

Student Council Treasurer
National Honor Society
Orchestra
Anime Club
Homecoming Committee

Sophomore year:

Student Council
International Club
Orchestra
Best Buddies
Homecoming Committee
Yearbook
Mentors (tutoring)
Forensics (public speaking)
Lots of volunteer hours
Student of the Year

Junior year:

Prom Committee
Student Council Secretary
Forensics
School Newspaper
Yearbook
Online Literature Magazine
Mentors
International Club
Orchestra
National Honor Society
Crap load of volunteer hours
Girls Tennis Manager

So yeah, I do a lot of clubs, but no sports. Would the admissions office care if I spoke two languages? Fuzhounese Chinese was my first language. It was shortly followed by Manadarin Chinese, and finally, English. I also took two years of Spanish and am planning to take a third senior year. I help my parents translate and do a lot of their paperwork. I also help their friends with translating and paperwork as well. I’ve helped my family and this one other family get health insurance. I helped my parents buy our condo with the paperwork and the bank transfer. You know, all that fancy stuff. But, I’m not sure if the things I just listed would give me a better shot at Madison. What do you think?

Oh, test score wise… I took the new PSAT and got a 1100 out of 1520, I believe. I just got my ACT score back and it was a 26…I don’t know if I should retake it. And my GPA isn’t the best either. I feel like all I can count on is my activities, but those don’t give me much of a boost. I took World History AP last year and got a 3 on the exam, but again, I don’t think they care about that.

Neither of my parents went to college. My parents grew up in China, so school wasn’t the first thing on their mind. My mom didn’t finish middle school and my dad finished high school.

Thank you for reading this! It’s been on my mind for a long time.

(I am a Wisconsin Resident.)

bump

Also a junior, was stressing out about college early in the year, it kinda went away, and now its starting to come back again. Idk that much about UW, but I do know that like UMich, UT Austin, OSU, big state schools like that it’s harder from OOS. Since your instate you probably have a pretty good chance, I would add some more AP classes next year just so they see there is some rigor in your schedule. It’s great that you are so involved outside of school, but remember, don’t try to thinly spread yourself out, try to focus in on a few activities, but if you can manage everything then it’s not a big deal. Again, I don’t know that much about Wisconsin admissions, but I’ll make an educated guess and say if you get that ACT in the 28-30 range you should be in.

Retake your ACT and try to get to a 28. Focus on the English section as this is easy to boost. If you get a can just get a few points higher you have a decent chance. Definitely not guaranteed though with your current score.

You should definitely retake your ACT again, but if that’s the only weak link in your application, I’d say you’re in pretty great shape. Try to get more A’s than B’s. Good job!

@belleizzy @dnstudent26 @pschnee I signed up to retake my ACTs! :slight_smile:

I will definitely take the not spreading myself too thinly advice. I am one of the founds of the clubs I’m in. I’m also yearbook editor next year and I am currently student council secretary. I’m planning to run for a position in NHS as well. And don’t worry! I currently have mostly A’s and two B’s.

Also, I’m not sure if this will give me a better chance at getting into Madison, but at my school, I was selected to represent my school at the Badger Girl’s State. One girl from each school is sent there, and they do lots of things. I know that every year at the seminar, the governor and other important state people give speeches every year. My school is paying for me to go.

From what i read you should be fine!
