If he doesn’t stand a good chance at HYPS, who does? Even if he didn’t have the ECs, a first-generation URM with a 4.0 and 2380 always has a fairly good shot. Of course these schools are crapshoots for everybody, but still.

@ CranberryOrange: I’m pretty sure Asian applicants are ORM’s, lol (over-represented minorities), which will actually hurt his chances to some extent.

AP Mandarin (to bring honor to my heritage) just made me smile, sadly a 5 on this actually doesn’t proove much, seriously, it’s at like 3rd grade level if that…
that aside, yeah, being Asian is an antihook(you’ll have to show somehow that you’re better than most of the other high scoring high ranking Asians out there the modeling thing is interesting, not too many people do that…
It’s honestly a lottery though, your stats put you in the running, the rest if up to the subjective stuff *rec letters and essays, btw you don’t mention how well you can write) and fate, good luck!

Without some sort of athletic recruitment process getting involved, I see you as a doubtful for all Ivies except maybe the lower couple. But, if what you are saying about yourself as basketball is true, then everything is a different story.

how are you guys actually debating whether he has a shot at the ivies, maybe just me but even without the basketball i would say he has an excellent shot at the ivies, not that he is in, but that he would probably get into at least one. Is competition to get into the ivies really that tough, I mean this guy has a 4.82 GPA with a 2380 SAT, that is just phenomenal. Forgive my blabbering but sometimes when people comment that kids of the caliber of HYPSMhopeful are doubtful for all ivies, I just get frustrated.

Anyways i think you have just as good a shot as anyone at all the ivies, if that is any consolation, even without recruitment I would be surprised if you got rejected everywhere. Of course I am no expert at this but as a current junior who knows seniors who got into the top schools, you easily beat their GPA’s, SATs, and EC’s.

After seeing how arbitrary (AND competitive) the college admissions process was this year, I am inclined to officially declare the uselessness of “chance me” threads.

Glad we’ve all come to the conclusion that chance threads are useless. Now to stop the unrelenting horde of posters looking for meaningless chances…

While the admissions process to HYPS is unpredictable and acceptance rates are declining, you still have a good chance of getting into one or more top schools.

Focus on leadership opportunities, build a strong resume, write compelling essays and look to at least two trusted teachers to provide you with excellent letters of recommendations. Also make certain you have at least two safeties.

Keep in mind that while HPYS has lowered acceptances, many candidates applying to these schools do not have comparable stats to yours.

No need to get frustrated. I’ve seen people who had 2400 SAT and got rejected by HYPSM. SAT and GPA don’t mean crap by themselves. You are reading into the numbers too much.

You are so in…
The grades and SATs are normal for an Ivy League applicant, but that basketball thing is amazing and will set you apart.
If I may ask, if you are the 3rd best point guard in California, why are you trying to go to Ivies when you could get a full ride for basketball at the best basketball schools in the country (UNC, G-Town)?
