You are an extremely strong candidate but OOS is still very hard. You need a great essay. Take your time and craft something that speaks to you and shows your abilities and how you can be an asset to the Michigan Campus /culture…
Legacy doesn’t matter much anymore and Michigan only accepts one recommendation (I would choose a teacher in a core subject, not band), but those nitpicks aside, you are a very strong candidate.
Michigan is a reach for OOS, so I can’t predict or give a probability, but your application sounds strong. Think carefully about your “Why Michigan” essay.
No reason you can’t legitimately apply to any college in America. I think you have a great chance but even if not, you’re certainly legit for Michigan and others at the highest level.
As others have said, I think you would be a very strong candidate for Michigan. As it is so popular with many highly-qualified students, there are no guarantees, though. Just make sure you know that even if you are accepted, merit aid is very hard to come by for out-of-state students. Is your family willing and able to pay the costs for OOS tuition at Michigan?
