<p>Hispanic Male from NJ
Freshman Year: 2 Bs, 4 Cs, 2 Ds (two honors classes)
Sophomore Year: 5 Bs, 2 Cs, 1 D
Junior Year --> Senior Year: Homeschooled</p>
<p>SATs:
Reading 710, Math 570, Writing 690
ACT: 29 combined</p>
<p>I'm awaiting SAT II results.
Extra-curricular activities while at high school:
-Fencing for 2 years
-Philosophy Club for 2 years
-President of a student political organization
-Participant of academic decathlon, won ~4 golds, 2~ silvers, ~2 bronzes
-Volunteered with a student volunteer organization</p>
<p>Other activities:
-Volunteered often at a center/shelter for disadvantaged children, opened up a music program there and taught guitar
-Performed classical guitar many times, studied under a professor at a notable music school, played in the university's ensemble*
-Going to take courses at a local (decent) college in the spring as part of a program</p>

<p>I'm afraid no college will take me seriously with such bad grades. Any insight?</p>

UMass Amherst / UPitt / Holy Cross as reaches.</p>
<p>What was your exact GPA? Do you have a valid reason for the low grades?</p>
<p>I never calculated my exact GPA, but I’m assuming it is a ~3.0
I don’t have a reason that I can show colleges, sadly. I was just going through some personal problems, but they aren’t the kind that come with a doctor’s note.</p>
<p>I’m not sure what this means “~” but it will be below a 3.0 (not sure the exact GPA since different classes have different values in a GPA depending on how many credits they are worth). Honestly I know almost nothing about the schools you listed (besides Pitt), but although your scores are good I don’t think they will compensate. I would call Pitt unrealistic, you would have a shot if you applied to a campus that is not the main one and then transfer.</p>
<p>So this is some months later, I think I might as well update it!</p>
<p>I’m so far three for three: Rutgers NB, Drew, and UConn.</p>
<p>UPitt has sent me an invitation to attend some events and will pay for my travel expenses, hotel room, and food.</p>
