Sorry this is so disorganized. Basically, my greatest achievements are in Music and math/science, I've done violin for 11 years, and piano for 8.

Thanks for chancing me in advance, and I'll chance back!

Thanks!!

It all depends on your actual SAT score and how your Yale research goes. Though you are on the right track. get a 2350+ and a siemens or intel semifinalist, coupled with your other random stuff, then u r in at at least one of HYP.

extracurriculars as they stand are weak and undifferentiated, numbers are fine. You will probably get into some of the lower ranked schools on your list, but to be successful for the higher level ones you will need some success in your ECs (a successful placement in a science competition should do nicely).

All right, thanks a lot guys! Yeah, I’m going to try and put in as much effort as possible with my science project this summer, so we’ll see how I do on that…

Hopefully, I can really get some stuff done in the next year and a half… thanks a lot for your feedback!

You’re as stereotypical asian as it gets. HYP don’t like it (especially if you’re from cali). They’re a dime a dozen.

your classes definitly seem rigorous enough, and your high GPA and SAT II scores won’t hurt for your top colleges.

your ECs are where i think you kinda fall a BIT short. you show obvious INTREST in math, science and music. intrest and achievements are two different things completely…there’s nothing that really gives you that WOW factor. they’re a bit all over the place. However, i think you should stay strong with the Yale research stuff, that seems like one of your extremely strong ECs, and if you get published or do well in your competitions, that will be a great thing to have on college apps. go a little more in-depth with your extracurriculars and make sure you not only show intrest, but achievement as well. and by achievement, i don’t mean “second highest scoring underclassman on B team”, i mean “second highest in the state” or something like that. Admittedly, your musical accomplishments are pretty good.

if you have time, check out my thread! http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1182115-chance-junior-help-cut-down-my-ridiculous-college-list.html</a></p>

It looks to me like you’re just laundry listing a bunch of things you’ve done, which won’t bode well for you when you apply to college.

haha yeah, this is basically an unconsolidated list of my achievements so far. I’ll definitely group them later more specifically like music, math, etc.

thanks though!

in what world are yale research, haiti benefit concert, writing math wikis, and teaching violin weak extracurricular activities?

While I do agree that the Yale research is a HUGE hook, doing a concert for Haiti is no different than volunteering at a soup kitchen or working with inner city kids. It’s certainly admirable that the OP did it, and it is DEFINITELY for a great cause, but it might not stand out as much to adcoms for that reason. Also, it’s called a math wiki because ANYONE can edit…I have edited various pages on wikis before, including 1 or 2 on wikipedia, and I don’t plan on really mentioning that.

Although, if the OP raised thousands and thousands of dollars in relief funds, I take that comment back.

yeah, it wasn’t a big concert or anything… but I thought it was worth mentioning. Thanks for your input!

anyone else?

I’m a junior also, so i probly don’t know anything, but I figured I’d help out a fellow stressed student! I think your ECs are a little generic (ex: Asian playing violin lol), though your stats are great, and you are certainly well rounded. Try to go as far as you can with that Yale research, and I think youll have decent chances at your top places. Also, can you chance me back? Thanks!

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1185199-how-my-ecs.html</a></p>

In all honesty that’s a pretty impressive resume. The fact that you are the quintessential asian male, however, definitely brings down your chances. That said, you really do have a great chance if you keep it up. Make sure you have some safety schools in case you’re subjected to the perfect storm or admissions rejections (as doubtful as it is, one can never be certain). Good luck!

Hey thanks! I know, it sucks being an asian male, but hopefully I can make up for it… somehow. I’m definitely going to have some safeties, these are just my reach schools for now, and was wondering what my chances are like for these schools.

What might be some good safeties then? Thanks!!!

@saints2009, yeah, you’re right. Actually, at this point I don’t really know what I’m looking for in a school and I don’t even know the colleges that I’m talking about yet. I’m going to have to look into that and really figure out what schools would be right for me, but this is just a preliminary thing to see if I even have a chance. Thanks for your input, and I’ll definitely take that into consideration.

Oh yeah, I also forgot to mention that during the summer, I volunteered at this camp for disabled children (both mentally and physically) for 60+ hours, and the pit orchestra was 80+ hours. So I did a lot of volunteering this summer, lol. Plus the nursing home volunteering every week, playing piano… thanks

Thanks man! I know, I’ll definitely have my list of safeties ready, but right now I’m just seeing if I even have a shot at those top schools. I appreciate the feedback.

Until you finish Junior year, there’s no telling how well you’ll do in the admissions process. Good luck though! :)
