I really want to get into UMich, which is why I'm applying again. I graduated from highschool this May. I got waitlisted at Emory, BC, Georgetown, and UMich. Got accepted to BU, Penn State, UIllinois, basically none of the schools I wanted to go to. I know, I know, I don't know why I even applied. :( So, I decided to take a gap year.

It's been 5 months since I've graduated. During then, I've been participating in Habitat for Humanity in my region, tutoring children and students with homework. I'm also preparing to take AP's again come May (Physics, Calc BC).

I've been trying to ask questions to UMich about reapplying and whenever I say so, they start telling me to transfer and that goes for quite a while and they tell me to not reapply as a freshman. Well, I didn't put a deposit to any of the schools I got in to so I want to try UMich again since i really want to go there.

My gpa is UW 3.7 and I'll be applying to LSA and hopefully, hopefully, get into Ross somehow.
SAT 2080 (M780 W670 R630) but I'm retaking this on November
SAT2 Math2 780, Physics 590 (yucks)
Captain of Volleyball team, concert master of orchestra, President of tutoring club. Treasurer of Habitat for Humanity (I have other ec's like MUN club, art club, etc)

Do you think I have a chance at all? :(

I would be careful about taking AP exams or any HS-level standardized test after HS graduation. A lot of colleges do not give credit for AP exams not taken while in high school and won’t care about your retakes once you’ve graduated.

I would generally agree with others about not re-applying as a freshman, as each year the freshman competition is tougher.

If you were wait-listed the first time, you of course have a chance the second time (albeit it not as great)… but taking AP exams and the SAT after HS graduation instead of college courses would tell me that you’re having a hard time letting go of high school, and that may end up coming to bite you in the rear.

Your HS stats were good and I don’t see any compelling reason to deny… but I don’t see a reason to admit either. Do a semester at another college, get good grades and you’d probably be in.

MayJune, since you are writing this question now, which is only about 3 weeks prior to the Early Action deadline, I am wondering when you applied last year? Eg. later than Nov. 1? If so, perhaps that goes a long way to explain the wait list.

I see no harm in applying regardless of your chances if you don’t want to wait and transfer. Write a strong essay about what you’re accomplishing with your gap year and get all your stuff in RIGHT NOW for the best chance. If they say no, you’re no worse off than before.
