Chance me? I appreciate it.

Here is what my application will likely look like (Early decision applicant)
SAT CR:640:( M:730 W:700 will try to retake in November, is it necessary?
SAT iis: 710 USH taking Math1
GPA 4.0 out 4.0 UW, 4.25 W
AP tests: 5 Eng Lang, 5 USH, 4 Euro, next year will take Comp gov, Spanish, Macro, Stat
Academic awards: not really given at my school, but in ninth grade I got awards in math, English, science, and social studies (9th grade middle school awards) APUSH class MVP
School: Competitive school district in PA
Ethnicity: White (Jewish)
ECs: president of NHS, president of Jewish Culture Club, captain of relay for life team, oboe/English horn, marching band, foreign affairs club, intern at state rep’s office
Recs (they should be very solid): APUSH, APLang, Summer teacher from Uni of Oxford, state rep, guidance counselor
Summers: internship at rep, studied International law in Oxford, summer of 2013 my mother had ovarian cancer:(
Misc: I am a very enthusiastic student and that should be evident within my essays, I’m extremely motivated (I am a work horse) and passionate about Emory

I feel for you, but the ovarian cancer thing (nor you being Jewish) should not be included in anything unless it shaped your interests or affected your performance which is clearly not the case (as in it seems to not have affected your performance). You’re basically set though. Maybe try to get 1400+ on the SAT and they may like you better. What are your academic interests? I have an idea but can’t tell. If it is what I think it is, sell it.

As for the misc: let your essays do the talking and show them how you think. You being a work horse is evident.

The only reason for mentioning the ovarian cancer was that I was limited in volunteer work I could do over that summer. If I have a high GPA, strong essays, visited multiple times, and good recs is it really that necessary to retake the SAT? I’m interested in political science primarily and Jewish studies; my essays reflect that. Thank you for the help by the way!

Emory doesn’t take demonstrated interest into account anymore though, and your volunteer work seems fine to me. It’s quality and less so quantity. If they are worth talking about and helped you develop, they are good. As for retake, not really, but hitting 1400 won’t hurt as many profiles may look kind of similar to yours. Being around or above Emory’s average admit (1420-1430) in the ED round makes you more desirable. They know if they admit you, you come, unlike those who score like that in the RD pile.

Thanks again!!!
