-i've been told by a georgetown alum that my essay is very creative and original.

colleges i'm looking into
-columbia (early decision)
-georgetown (early action)
-new york university (regular)
-george washington university (regular)
-university of md college park (regular)
-boston college (regular)
-boston university (regular)
-university of virginia (regular)
-university of michigan (regular)

what are my chances? :P
and do you see any of the colleges offering any types of scholarships to me?

errr... it might be important to include the tiny fact that i am indeed asian american. there goes half my schools,eh? haha just kidding....kind of.

does anybody know if barnard is part of columbia college? or do i have to apply separately?

are you serious? Rutgers Hopeful you are being a tad idealistic.

columbia is a bit of a reach for you because of your GPA and georgetown would be a kind of high match, at best.

your obvious weakness, as you know, is your GPA. i don't understand why UMich would give you "tons of cash," however.

what is your school's history with these schools? that's what matters, and do you have a class rank or not? where do you stand in regard to your GPA?

columbia (early decision): reach
georgetown (early action): high match/low reach
new york university (regular): match
george washington university (regular): safety
university of md college park (regular): safety
boston college (regular): match
boston university (regular): match
university of virginia (regular): out of state or not? oos match/reach
university of michigan (regular): out of state or not? oos slight match

i actually go to school in maryland, and my high school is considered one of the very top high schools in the nation. all of these schools are out of state for me except for umcp. i have several other safeties in mind, so i don't think we have to worry about those. unfortunately (or maybe it's fortunately?) our school does not have a ranking system.

do you think that applying early to columbia is too much of a long shot for me to even consider? do i actually have a chance, or am i just wasting my time?

i respect everyone's opinions but Rutgers Hopeful, i really doubt your predictions :) thanks if you were trying to give me a boost though! anybody else? college admissions are so imminent, especially early decision/action. yikes!

There's a nasty rumor going around CC that colleges discriminate against Asians. It can't be true. Think about it. First of all, it's totally unethical. Second, the committee would have to have a reliable way to figure out who is Asian and who's not. Impossible. What they might do is discriminate against boring profiles with high scores and few ECs.

Columbia is a stretch given that you didn't do your best junior year (a bad decision to slack off there) -- but go ahead and apply anyway if that's where you want to go. The Barnard application is separate.

I'm sorry if I offended you in any way, greennblue. I was just making a light joke. But when you say "What they might do is discriminate against boring profiles with high scores and few ECs.", do you mean that I fit that category?

They do discriminate. Whenever colleges institute a "colorblind admissions" percentage of Asians goes up at least 10 percent.

They need funding by admitting protected minorities (all nonwhites except Asians) and they can't alienate the majority pop. by having over half minority students, so Asians have a lot of competition.

Sorry greennblue, you seem kind of racist.
For example, I am an Asian student and I do not play violin or piano, and my focus is in humanities (though I definitely will shoot for well rounded, not well lopsided. I'm one of those unlucky (lucky?) students who are talented at everything but excel at nothing...)
