Chance Me (I'll Chance Back)

I think UPenn is a low reach. Princeton and Columbia are high reaches. The previous poster referred to Williams as a backup, but with an acceptance rate of 17% it can hardly be considered backups–LACs admit fewer students. Thanks for the responses and I would appreciate any others. Update: I received a 36 on my ACT ( Ii don’t even know how) and will use that instead of SAT

Dang with that new score you just increased your chance at least slightly… Do you have any special ECs that you could right about in depth? I think your EC list does not make me to think that you are unique…? Good essay will definitely help you!

Help me?

This is cool, but princeton is a reach, as is for all. You have a good reach for it, but you know, no one can really predict anything with princeton

Columbia seems easier though

UPENN, arts and sciences? seems cool!

I think your scores are great even for the ivies, but you should definitely get some ec’s that are in your areas of interest or at the very least some more nongeneric ec’s, like the teaching at the mosque is good but maybe some more like that, if you can volunteer another way in your community and show you have a strong connection to your culture and community I think that would help a lot

Thanks for responses and I’m starting to gain some confidence. I’m still gunning for Princeton EA in the fall. More responses and thoughts are appreciated.

Update: I plan to have around 500 hours of service done at the mosque by the time I apply, if that helps my cause.

impressive stats, im sure that you have a chance at getting in, but not 100%… im sure that if u apply to several ivys your bound to get in at least one… yours academic stats are great but your ECs dont really stand out…

chance me?

Great job at doing so well at your super competitive school! I think your scores are fine for any school. For your extracurriculars, I think leading your school’s fencing team to nationals is pretty awesome. Do you have other similar achievements with fencing, either by yourself or as a team? ECs are great when they are clustered into your interest areas; maybe you can expand on your Club Épée team even more to showcase your passion.

I think perhaps the biggest problem you will face is not something in your control: other competitive people applying from your school. Keep in mind in some cases, adcoms view the entire applicant pool from one high school, especially ultra competitive ones. This was how some Thomas Jefferson kids were rejected from MIT a few years back; they were qualified, but not as qualified as their peers in their class.

You have a chance but the EC are somewhat weak. Maybe if you give a very emotional rollercoaster ride on you essay you’ll improve your OK chances to pretty good

  1. Don't take the ACT unless you have to. Even getting a 36 will not really help your cause. A 2280 or a 2300 is more than enough for elite schools. Your EC's are very good. I have no idea how much weight the fencing thing you have going on has but I imagine it is a very substantial achievement. Keep in mind the three schools you listed have insanely low admission rates. It will be even lower this year so adcoms will be looking even more at the essays than they have in the previous years. I'd say reach for all 3 not because you're not qualified, you're an amazing student excelling at one of the top high schools in the nation, but that your results will be so heavily based on what you write in your essays and how you write them that we cannot accurately predict your results based solely on stats. Also, what do you plan on majoring? That might have some impact on your chances at these schools. For example, getting into Wharton will be so much harder than the other schools at UPenn.

Thanks guys i appreciate the responses so far and hopefully I commented on all the chance threads that you posted. More posters would be welcomed and I will chance back!

Update: Well building off of the “use fencing more to ur advantage” advice, I was actually just selected on US Fencing and Absolute Gear’s All Academic First Team for qualified fencers who have displayed high grades in the classroom. Hopefully, this recognition adds to my resume significantly.

Your academic qualifications are impressive! In conjunction with your leadership positions, they’ll make you a very attractive applicant. Looks like you have a good chance at Columbia and UPenn, but Princeton would still be a high reach, even though you’re applying early action (it’s that way for basically everyone who applies). Good luck! Chance me back please?:

Princeton is kind of iffy. Your academics are fantastic and on track. And with your new fencing achievement, I think that’ll add to your ECs tremendously!
Princeton- Reach
Columbia- High Match
UPenn- Low Reach
Best of luck!

Update: I just received my E in epee, which hopefully shows colleges that I have some skill in fencing. Will this help much? Thanks for all the help.

Update: I’ve decided to apply to some BS/MD schools as well. These include TCNJ/NJMS, Rutgers/NJMS, NJIT/NJMS, and Drexel/Drexel. I know I have little or no hospital or medical work, but I’m hoping some of my other aspects can overshadow it. Do you guys think I have a chance?

bump

Your academics are great, but like everyone else has said, the biggest way that you can improve is through extracurriculars. Try to find something unique that really sets your application apart, since your application is similar to a lot of others with your current achievements.

@wneely16 Yah I’m trying but I hope its my essay that really sets me apart. Thanks for the input!
