Chance Me? (I'll chance back!)

Hey all,

I applied to Yale in the Restrictive Early Action program, and now I just have to sit and wait until December 15 and it is KILLING ME. I really feel like I have a good chance of acceptance, but what do you think?

GPA: 92.96/100.00 UW at an admission-only public magnet school; all honors; one AP class (the only one available to me)
SATS: 2120 composite (740 V/ 640 M/ 742 W) first try (2nd in November); 730 Lit II; waiting on US History.

I've been elected class president for four years in a row, and have lead some pretty cool stuff: we took the first student-run class field trip in years, and have raised more money than the majority of the classes to come through my school. My principal personally wrote my guidance counselor recommendation.

I'm a classically trained pianist, have been for 15+ years, and I taught myself to play the guitar as well. I also play the saxophone and the flute, and I sing and write as well. I sent three musical pieces (one original song, one classical piece, and one jazz piece) with my application.

I've been a Girl Scout for as long as I can remember, and I have my Gold and Silver Awards. I also have integrated my music and community service to do things like perform at elderly homes, banquets, etc. My supplementary recommendation is from the CEO of my regional Girl Scout area.

As a member of SkillsUSA, I have earned two state medals (one silver, one bronze) and went on to win the bronze medal at the national skills leadership conference in 2009. I also have a silver medal from TSA state competition.

Honest to goodness, I really don't mean to 'toot my own horn' when I say this, but I wrote really fantastic essays, and my teacher recommendations are pretty bangin'.

So what do you think? I know my SAT scores are low, but I'm really hoping that my 'real person' appeal will overcome the kids with 4.fivemillion GPAs, extensive ping-pong championship titles, and 2400 SATs. You tell me. I'll chance you back!

Thanks (:

Ivies are all wildcards.
However, you’re not in a bad position, especially with those dedicated ECs.
If you bring up your SAT to a 2200+ in November, I think you’d have an even more solid chance.

Chance me?

Your SATS are in range could be a little higher same with GPA. EC’s are kind of weak except president for 4 years. I’d say you are looking at a 55/45 chance right now.

Thanks for the feedback! Check your threads tomorrow evening, I’ll get back to you (:

Ivyleague, what do you mean by 55/45? I’m confused.

Also, I definitely don’t think of my extracurriculars as weak, so I figure I’ll fill in some more details:

My music is absolutely my top extra curricular. I’ve been playing since I was a toddler (true story) and I have multiple awards from a highly regarded association in my area (I’m avoiding specific names to maintain confidentiality), as well as placing and performances in local talent shows and showcases. I was also invited to play at Lincoln Center when I was 11 (turned it down because I didn’t really know what was going on!)

I also only hilighted my most important ECs. There are others:
-writer/TV personality for school newspaper/media club
-Key Club member, 4 years
-Oops, totally forgot National Honor Society. General member, joined at the earliest time possible.
-Spanish Honor Society, earliest time possible, general member.
-I also have taught piano lessons from my home for about six years, totally forgot that one too! And I hold seasonal jobs in the summer.
-Academic team member, three years. General member.
-I’m also a c/Senior Chief Petty Officer as a Company Chief in my JROTC unit. As a member of the drill team freshman and sophomore year, my team won the Area Championship (last level before nationals).

Okay, that’s really everything! I was a little hesitant because I do most of these extra things for fun, rather than to put it on my resume. The really important stuff was in the first post.

Like I said, check your threads tomorrow! I’ll be there!

(:

I meant like you have a lil above average chance like instead of 50/50 chance 55/45 chance get it.

You are definately a well rounded indivdual and your confidence in your recs and essays is very inportant so it becomes your applications wow factor even if you don’t have the extreme grades and test scores. Bonne Chance! and chance me!!

Oh, I understand. Thanks for the feedback!

That 742 on Writing is pretty impressive! :)

But I think you have a decent shot if you can get your SAT’s up to a 2200+. Luckily, math is the easiest to bring up so prep like crazy!

Good luck!

i think your definently a strong student overall. i think essays are the key to getting into those ivies because their really the only things setting you apart from the other million 4.0’s and ec heavy students. your class ranking would be helpful to know. your sat’s arnt particularly strong (i mean their better than mine but only 25th percentile for yale), however you dont have to be 90th percentile to be admitted, hell you could be 1st percentile but youd still get in. the magnet school thing should help alot but your lack of AP courses may hurt you. since you took the hardest courses thoguh that shouldnt hurt you too much, as long as you took all the oppurtunities and did well in them (obviously you have). early admission was very essential and you boosted your chances alot with that. ultimately, i wouldn’t be too worried, its not really in your hands anymore and i’m sure alot of colleges would love to have you. maybe sign up for some state schools early decision programs that arnt restrictive as safeties. anyway, well good luck and i hope you make it :)

It seems that your interest is definitely in communications and music, judging from your EC’s (setting aside the typical keyclub, nhs, etc.)

And yes, you are qualified to be in the Ivies eg. Yale SCEA, and I don’t discourage applying for there, seems like a nice fit. Sadly we all know they’re a bit loopy with the final decisions.

One thing I think will definitely help is an essay focusing on your EC’s in relation to your skills and future plans for study, since your application seems to be oriented very well towards a certain direction already.

EDIT: My post seems rather negative. It’s definitely not. It’s very good and coherent towards what I can see you are interested in.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1019616-chance-me.html</a></p>

Wow, thanks for all the feedback! I’ll try to get to everyone’s thread tonight, but no promises. But I will chance you, sooner or later, I promise!

(:

Oops, that 742 was (obviously) a typo; I got a 740. (;

I think that overall, you have a pretty good chance. Your SAT 1 score is a little low, but the class presidency and music can make up for that. I’d say Yale is a reach simply because of the competition, but you seem to be a solid applicant. Make sure you write strong essays and display your passion for music as much as possible.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1017233-chances-some-schools-please.html</a></p>

I’m about to find out in T-minus 48 hours, so naturally I still feel the need to do this despite the fact that it’s completely unnecessary and probably a waste of my time…

BUT. Update: I brought my SAT scores up in November with a composite score of 2260 (800 CR/ 690 M/ 770 W); however, I sort of tanked (by these standards) the U.S. History (640).

If anyone felt like chancing me again, or for the first time, my promise still stands that I’ll chance you back. Thanks!
