Asian (Indian) female from Michigan
Rank: 16/500

UW GPA: 3.84
ACT: 31
SAT: 1850 (CR: 580 M: 720 W: 550)
(I'm retaking my SAT later)

AP's: Physics B, Calculus AB, Calculus BC, Chemistry, Government, U.S. History,
IB's: English Yr. 1 and Yr. 2, IB Economics, IB Math Yr. 1, Yr. 2, Ib. Biology Yr. 1, Yr. 2
Electives: 1 Yr. of Newspaper, 1 Yr. of Journalism, 1 Yr. of Anatomy

I was in all honors classes all four years

Not that many EC's, but I volunteered 200+ in a hospital.
Sports: JV and Varsity tennis

I'm only worried about my lack of extra-curriculars, even though I've held a lot of leadership positions at my school.

Chance me at:

Vanderbilt
University of Michigan
University of Madison
Carnegie Mellon University
University of Washington St. Louis
University of Pennsylvania
Penn State

Your SAT definite needs a re-take. Its showing your exceptional math skills but does little to give us a picture of your English abilities.
Your ACT looks pretty good, and GPA + Rank are looking fine. APs and IBs are numerous, showing that you have a dedicated schedule, and your volunteering is pretty safe.
Your extracurriculars are looking a bit shaky, but if you can show the admissions officers that you have concentrated your efforts into a few leadership positions or activities, you will stand a much better chance in applying to your colleges.

With your ACT score in mind:
Vanderbilt- High Match
University of Michigan- Low/ Medium Reach
Carnegie Mellon University- Low/ Medium Reach
University of Washington St. Louis- Unsure
University of Pennsylvania- High Reach
Penn State- Match

Did you take SAT II's? And it would help to post the grades in which you did your sports and volunteer hour. Where did you do your ECs/ Volunteers. Good luck!

in at penn state and thats about it....way way way too low of an sat and you should be worried about your ec's...right now almost all those seem impractical

My SAT is bad, I know =[
I'm retaking it next month.
I couldn't tell you the results of my SAT II's offhand, but I took Spanish and Physics and I gotaround 700 on both.

So my chances for University of Michigan aren't that great?

Being in-state, you have slightly better chances for UMich. From what I've heard, a good score for UMich is above 30+ ACT, and SAT preferably above 2050 or 2100. I think your chances will be much better with such scores, since you have a challenging courseload and good GPA. ECs aren't looking terribly impressive right now. Safe bet is to increase your reading and writing scores to 650-700+, and maybe a bit higher on the math.

This was written in mind that UMichigan is a top choice for you.
Hope you do well! And if you didn't get another good SAT score, I'd suggest only sending the ACT.

Yeah, ACT score is substantially better than your SAT, so send that if your SAT doesn't turn out too well. Weak EC's from what you've shown us, but you did say that you held some leadership positions at your school. That said,

Vanderbilt- Low match
University of Michigan- High match
University of Madison- Match
Carnegie Mellon University- Low reach
University of Washington St. Louis- Reach
University of Pennsylvania- High reach
Penn State- Match

For southern schools such as Vanderbilt, I'd definately just send in your ACT score.
If you could provide your ECs, we'd get a better idea of how you really stand out.

In my opinion..

Vanderbilt- Low match
University of Michigan- Match
University of Madison- Match
Carnegie Mellon University- Low Match/Reach
University of Washington St. Louis- High Reach
University of Pennsylvania- High reach
Penn State- Match

Your SAT math score is really good. However, re-taking the SAT is essential. Colleges would rather have a perfect reading/lower math than perfect math/lower reading.

Vanderbilt--Low reach
University of Michigan--Match
University of Madison--Match
Carnegie Mellon University--Reach
University of Washington St. Louis--High Reach
University of Pennsylvania--High reach
Penn State--Match

yeah like everyone else, i think you need to raise the SAT above 2050 if you want a chance at the top schools.

Vanderbilt–good shot
University of Michigan–Match
University of Madison–safety
Carnegie Mellon University–Reach
University of Washington St. Louis–High Reach
University of Pennsylvania–unlikely
Penn State–match (unless you raise SAT)

Vandy- good shot
Washinton @ St.Louis- very unlikely (you will be termed “just another asian premed” by the adcoms)
U Penn- very very very very unlikely for CAS. -1 Very for SEAS. Unlikely for Nursing. (impossible for wharton)
Carnegie mellon- maybe. Same chance as average Applicant.
