Chance me/information about Blair, Peddie, Miss Porter's, Hill, and Loomis chaffee

HI! I am currently a freshman(grade 9) and want to apply for my junior year. I think I MIGHT want to apply as a repeat sophmore. Is it possible to apply for both grades? and I think I would rather be a repeat 10th grader. Any info on that?

These are the schools I think I might want to apply to:

Blair Academy
Peddie School
Miss Porter's
Suffield Academy
Kent School
Loomis Chaffee
Cheshire Academy
Northfield Mount Hermon

I'm in 2 honors classes, and I take 2 classes that are meant for students a year ahead of me. My GPA for middle school is about 93% averaged together. I plan on working really hard in school for the next year to bring up my GPA, because right now it's about 87%. I think I can get it to 94% or better. I have been in honors classes since grade 4, and I have had poems I wrote in grades 4 and 5 put in a book for young poets and in a kid's litterary magazine, if that matters.(I don't think it does)

I haven't taken the SSAT, but I'll have a year to prepare, so I think I can get 85%+.

Cross country 3 years
Track(indoor and outdoor) 2 years
French club
1-3 times a week community service

Also, I would need A LOT of finaincal aid.
Any information would be great, suggestions, chances, and anything else would be great. THANK YOU!

Although I don’t know most of those schools, you seem like a decent student. Try to get a 95%ile or so on you ssat, and get some extra curriculars in next year, to make your application shiny! Do you have any sport that your good at ? bcuz that would help you considerable

I run track and cross country…I think I might want to try squash if I get into one of the schools, but I haven’t done it before.

95%ile? no. average for ANDOVER is 93%, so for these schools its probs about 80’s%ile. but a 95%ile couldn’t hurt you! lol. go to boardingschoolreview.com for more info on percentiles and stuff.

Lol I looked and these are all the schools I was really thinking about.

Reach:Suffield Academy, Kent School,Loomis Chaffee

Good Choice:Blair, Peddie, Miss Porter’s, Hill, Mercersburg

Safety: HMH, cheshire

if you are looking into squash … you should maybe apply to Deerfield Academy, I visited and they had beautiful state of the arts squash courts … they blew me away

I don’t think I have any chance at deerfield…looking at some of the other chance pages stats are blown away

Does anybody have any more info? about any of the schools?

I would recommend that you look at brooks it might be a safety or a good choice for you but after looking at multiple schools they have squash courts that are easily on par with some of the top-tier schools. The only problem is that they don’t give out too much financial aid but it doesn’t hurt to look at it.

Brooks gives a good amount of FA, I just wasn’t sure I could get in…it seems hard. I like Brooks, and it is a nice school.

if you get an 85+ you’ll get into all of those schools. Most of their average scores are like 70s.

Peddie does have low SSAT scores but their admission rate 22%,which probably means that Peddie doesn’t look that far into SSAT scores and cares more about other things. So yeah:) I think you have a great shot at all of the schools. I love Peddie, btw.

Did/do you go to peddie?

No, you need a much higher SSAT percentile than the average of the schools because you’re applying for financial aid and if you’re applying for financial aid that means you’re not from a connected family. Blair is in the 70’s though so you would be fine with high 80’s. I need full financial aid too so I know how this all feels… sigh…

Yes…it seems very annoying lol. Do you have any tips for the SSATs? I saw your post saying your score…impressive!

anybody else have any info?

I could try to give some advice about the ssats. I’ve only taken them once so I’m not exactly an expert but here’s my two-cents:
-make sure you bring a snack/drink with you so you can eat it during the breaks
-you have to write your essays in pen so don’t be surprised when you can’t use a pencil (also the time goes by much quicker than you’d think so plan things out carefully)
-get a lot of sleep the night before because the test is physically and mentally draining
-one of my strategies was to go through all the questions and answer the ones I knew right away and save the challenging ones for later
that’s really all I can think of now. Hope when the ssats come you do well :)

I know kids in Deerfield, Miss Porters, Westmininster, Choate, suffield and Loomis Chaffee. There are so many things that come into consideration. One big thing is financial aid vs full pay. The kids that we know that go to the above mentioned school are amazed how some kids got in. Basically, if you are FP, you have a much better chance to get in. The day students at these schools are always the best students. We know a kid that took the SSAT 3 times, getting a 30, 40 and ?% ( he didn’t share 3 score) anyhow, he was a good not great lacrosse players, average in EC’s, He is a full pay and got into Deefield, another girls was a good student, FP got into Miss Porters, We now know that the ability to pay plays a huge role in whether you are admitted or not.Lets face it, they need some to pay full price. So, basically all kids get in by numbers, the higher you ssat score and gpa, or the higher your bank account. If you don’t have one you better have the other. Wish it were different. A few schools are need blind, many boarding schools aren’t.

Hello!

I am currently an 8th grader, applying to the Peddie school for my freshman year and so forth. I just wanted to get some feedback of whether or not my resume is good enough for a good chance.

8th Grade 1st quarter grades:
Physical Science: A
French: A-
Drama: A+
Ethics (Social Studies): A-
English: A
Geometry: B
Gym: A

7th Grade overall grades:
Life Science: B
Algebra I: B-
English: B+
French: B
Gym: A
History: B

6th Grade:
Literature: A+
Math: A
Earth Science: A
Geography: A
Grammar: A+
French: A+ (or A, I can’t recall…)
Gym: A

I know I’ve been slacking off during 7th grade, but as long as they look at my improvement in 8th grade and my straight A’s in 6th, they can still consider me, right? Also, I am taking the advanced math course currently because of my successful math grades in 6th. I hope Peddie also takes that into consideration, because of my B.

My extracurricular:
-Played third singles on my school tennis team. I secured an 8-1 record for the team.
-Played the violin for 11 years (started when I was 2), and am part of the Senior Youth Orchestra for high schoolers, even though I’m only in 8th grade.
-Performed in a play at a professional local theater in 5th grade, receiving many positive reviews from newspapers such as the Star Ledger and New York Times
-Have been on the forensics team ever since 6th grade (not debate… drama, acting, monologues competing against different schools), and have been a finalist and honorably mentioned every single competition in my middle school years besides one.
-First degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do
-Visited Korea, and have helped some kids learn English
-Was part of the Broadcasters club at my school, which is sort of like public speaking. We were all required to write up speeches to announce through the income speaker each morning.
-Was part of the Digital Design and Photography club, which is a class where we learn how to photoshop different photos. It’s really cool.
-Was part of the School Newspaper Associates. We were required to write different articles about events happening at our school. It enhances our writing abilities.
-Part of my school orchestra… Concert mistress, and best violinist in the entire school. (K to 12th grade)

This year I made the regional intermediate orchestra, however I’d already sent in my application before I got accepted. Would it be fine if I called them and let them know? Sorry, I seem so naive about this subject!

Also… I’ve heard from a numerous amount of people that certain boarding schools check certain applicant’s facebooks? And even if you only have to send in your first quarter 8th grade grades, they may call the school and ask for my second quarter grades because of their curiosity? If anyone has heard about that from other people, let me know so I can be aware to make sure I keep my facebook page clean!

I took my SSAT, and got an overall 67 percentile… It is a horrible score, even for a young 8th grader, so I am retaking it in a couple of days. If I barely made around a 70, would I still have a chance, based on all my other activities?

My essays seemed pretty attention-grabbing and convincing. However, I really am not the one to determine that. I’m just hoping for the best. Also my English teacher and school orchestra teacher said they wrote very positive recommendations, however I’m not too confident with my geometry teacher.

Ooh, and if anyone knows, do grades totally matter? Some people say that the grades are a lot more important than the extracurricular, and you have to be studious in order to get accepted. Others say that you don’t have to get AMAZING grades, but if you have a lot of extracurricular activites that make you seem interesting and unique, they can still accept you. Others say they completely hold a spot for extracurricular people to make the school look good in all the activities that student could participate in.

Please give me feedback anyone. I would appreciate it a TON. Thanks so much!!!

Ooh, and responding to @browneyedgirl8;

I think you have a pretty good chance! You seem very well rounded and interesting. :)
