Hey guys, I am an Indian currently in my senior year of High School at my home country and have lots of confusions in my head which I thought could at least a little resolved with public opinion. I was applying to the US earlier this year but due to a sudden financial issue was forced to change that decision but I am really keen on doing my college in the US only. Could I please know my options? My stats are just OK, not too great as a long-term illness did not allow me to attend school very regularly. I also have a financial limitation, my parents can only contribute about 10,000-15,000$ per year. That's why I wanted to look at colleges which give international students a lot of financial aid and scholarships. My career plan as of now is to go to Law School later on.
Grade 9 - 68%
Grade 10 (Board Exams) - 78%
Grade 11 - 65%
Grade 12 - 70%
SAT Score - 1680 (Composite)
All the regular Extra-Curriculars.
Please do help guys! Thanks a lot!

Your GPA and SAT score are very low…

I was planning on taking a gap year and improving my stats, giving an AP exam or two and getting my SAT score higher, but I just wanted to know, do I stand a realistic chance of aid? Merit-based or need-based.

Indian scores aren’t on the same value-scale as American scores so those % are decent (add about 20 pts for an American average).
Have you taken O’Levels or ICGSE’s? A-Levels? If you have, those will be factored into your application and GPA.
If you haven’t, it’d be to your advantage to register for AP exams and take them THIS MAY (2014), self studying 3 or 4 subjects as you would for A Levels.
Most of all, you need to prep for the SAT (use number2.com and khanacademy.org) and get a higher score.
You probably can’t attend Law School in the US. It’s very expensive (no financial aid) and unless you’re admitted to the top third it’s not worth it since there’s an oversupply of lawyers. If you intend to study law in India I’m not sure how studying in the US would help. Might you be interested in international relations, public policy, or government, instead?

Hey MYOS1632, thanks a lot for the reply. I am currently in my senior year, and we have these huge final exams in March so I am only studying for that right now, I will give 2 AP’s in May though. I haven’t exactly decided on what to do for sure later on, law was just an option, thanks for all that information though! My main question was regarding financial aid though, so could you give your opinion on that too? What college could I get into with my current stats? Keeping in mind I need at least 60-75% financial aid! Thanks
