Chance me (International Student)

Hello Grinell forum

Basic: Male, Indian

Standardized Tests: SAT 2210 (retook this dec, hoping for a 2300+), Physics 800 Math 2C 800 Lit. 720

School Results: 9th-87% 10th-9.6/10 CGPA 11th-82% 12th-83%

Rank: School doesn't rank (does that hurt me?), I know that I am in the top 3 of my class. Should I ask my counsellor to mention that?

ECs:
1. Have been performing magic for 4 years. But haven't got a full show or anything. I just perform in the school and in the market.
2. Community service (Teaching kids). 3 years. Don't know the exact hours but 500+
3. NTSE Scholar (cleared all three levels)

Essays: Good, but not very good.

What are my chances?

The rule of thumb -to my knowledge- is that a cumulative of 93.5% gets you a small merit-air scholarship to Dartmouth.
If that 9.6/10 = 96%, I think you’ll do fine with Grinnell.
Of course the aggregate information I have on the Indian Education system are bits from the NYT so take it with a pinch of salt.

I think it would be fine to ask your GC to mention it if you are in the top 3 in your class. We can’t tell you, of course, if you will be accepted, but your stats are really good and your ECs are interesting. Work on that essay. It’s the best way for the admissions committee to see the “real you” behind the stats.

@clockwork: Well the Indian schools grade hard. Nobody gets above 90% in classes 11th and 12th. The maximum percentage in my class is around ~85%. And that CGPA to percentage thing. It’s 9.6*9.5=91%. The max. you can get is a 10 which means 95%. Thanks a lot.

@bethievt: I’ll ask him to do that then. And I’ll work on the essay too. Thanks.

You look good. Work on the essays and make sure to tell them why you do magic (it’s a great EC!)

It doesn’t hurt you that your school doesn’t rank, as many schools no longer rank.

Good luck!
