sigh, it has come down to a dreaded chance forum. Although I hate these in general, I have no real pundit to speak to on the matter, and I need an approximation to help cut down my list of 20 ish universities. Btw I have no one to talk to because there has been maybe one or two people from my town go to ivies, and most people dont know what the SAT even is… I’m sure I wont be getting the greatest advice, and I know many are reaches, but hopefully I have decent odds at some of these.
School list in order: Harvard, Yale, Columbia, MIT, Dartmouth, Princeton, Cornell, UChicago, Vanderbilt, Vassar, Upenn, NYU there are more schools that I may add to increase odds, but that I dont necessarily love.

2 - work at high end restaurant 25 hours a week gr 10-11
3 - work at another high end restaurant 25 hours a week gr 12
4 - city council, student representative, work with mayor and councillors
5 - youth council, student rep, help poor kids in community
6 - ice hockey goalie, 8 years, provincial champions, numerous rep teams/select teams
7 - paid tutor for kids with learning disabilities: work with about 10 students
8 - volunteer tutor for physics 12 & math 12, school during lunch and after school daily
9 - mcc thriftshop volunteer, trite, worked with homeless alot etc
10 - back up acting in movies, various roles like in supernatural and a movie coming out in 2016

essays: special circ: 10/10 other one: 9/10
recs: counselor: not sure teacher 1: shes letting me edit it so 10/10 teacher 2: also edit so 10/10

hook: I think this counts? advice? Pretty much in special circumstance essay I spoke about how my dad lost his job and I had to work 25 hours a week on average while balancing school. But thats not the hook, thats fairly common. On top of this my mom became bipolar and had fits of psychosis. Meanwhile I had to take care of her and help parent in my family, then my parents got separated and her bipolar got worse. I had to provide for myself in more ways than just money, as she essentially lost her person-hood. The story goes on and thats not full detail, but hopefully the picture gets across.

I hate these forums, but a bit of outside opinion will be beneficial. I genuinely thought I had a decent shot at maybe even some of the higher ranking ones until I started reading other chance threads. anyways, last post, thanks

You’re certainly competitive for these schools, however you desperately need some matches and safeties. You may not like the other schools you’re thinking about, but there is a reasonable chance you’d get rejected from all of the schools you listed here, just because they are extremely selective. Out of curiosity, what are the other schools? They need to be a few safeties and matches, not just more reaches. In addition, I feel like you may need to reevaluate your list a bit - you’re applying to every Ivy except Brown and they are all very different. Also, just so you know, your “hook” is not a hook in the traditional sense. A hook is considered to be being an Underrepresented Minority, Legacy, or First Generation college student.

@collegebobollege yes i realize that about the hook thing & my legit like back up back up safeties are in Canada. However, all of them are pretty much instant acceptance. In Canada it really doesn’t take much to get in. That’s why I mainly have high ranked US universities on the list here. What level of school would you consider to be a match for me in the states?

From your list I’d consider NYU and Vassar matches. I’d also consider schools like Tulane, Emory, and maybe USC matches. There’s also a lot of great liberal arts schools around.

okay so I was on the right track I thought NYU would be match level as well. Thank you
