Chance me? (ivies and 2nd tier)

I’m currently a High School Senior. I’m applying to the ivies, NYU Stern, UMich, Duke, Emory, Fordham as well. I got deferred by MIT, Uchicago, and Umich in early action and was accepted by Rutgers but those came out before I got the regeneron award.

Interviews and essays were strong. I’m asian though :
I live in a affluent white community, but only like 5 people get into or go to ivies every year out of classes of like 350. I’m hoping that my research and music portfolio will put me ahead of my peers though since I’m like the first person from my school to ever do those things. The only thing I’m worried about is my GPA because I’m one of the top students but not THE top if you know what I mean.

What do you think my chances are? I know most of the top schools are unpredictable in decision marking but I’m being hopeful.
Also, does being Regneron STS make an impact?
My sister was an MIT alum, will that help?

Any response is greatly appreciated :slight_smile:

What’s your unweighted gpa and intended major (I’m assuming business because NYU Stern…)?

But to be honest, your chances look really great, especially with the Regeneron STS!

@girl14195
Well you’ve already been deferred from several meaning you chances aren’t high. MIT, UChicago are reaches.
Stern, UMich, and Emory are low reaches. The award you received may be helpful but Im not sure.

I agree with @randomstudent46 that it would help to have your unweighted GPA. Also, do you have any budget constraints?

You are already in at a very good school so the fact that you have a list of high reaches (MIT, ivies, Chicago) and low reaches seems fine to me. I don’t know Fordham well enough to know whether it counts as a match.

We need to see your unweighted GPA, but since you have a 4.3 I assumed you are in the the high 3.7s to 3.9s so you seem to have a decent chance at most of these schools, but all these schools are very competitive, I would add some more safety schools

@u1whope As there is no standard in wGPA, there is no way to guess the uwGPA from wGPA except that the uwGPA cannot be higher than wGPA.

Your stats is great and you still have decent chance for 2 tier ivy.

Regeneron STS semifinaist will help. Hopefully you sent the information to the schools that deferred you.

Although the course rigor looks good, I don’t see a science class in your senior year schedule and you have only 1 AP science test score. Most of your peers will likely have taken AP Physics as well and your school choices will want you to have at least 3 years of lab sciences (preferably 4).

@randomstudent46 unweighted 3.8

@DadTwoGirls 3.8 and no budget restraints, I didn’t even fill out fafsa

@Hamurtle i’m taking honors bio this year, but I self studied it in previous years. I just didn’t write out the rest of the classes because they aren’t APs but I’m taking like 5 more classes that I didn’t put on the list. I was only able to take one AP science course due to course restraints at my school and my schedule.

Regeneron STS I think makes a huge impact. Someone I knew got deferred from MIT and then became a semi-finalist for STS, I think, and he ended up getting into MIT I believe. Make sure you update your application for every school with this accomplishment.

Your stats and ECs are top notch. I think you have a very good chance at getting accepted to the Ivies relative to most other applicants

You have such good extracurriculars and accomplishments! If you wrote your essays well, I’m sure you could get into most schools that you applied to.

The only “2nd tier” schools that you’ve listed here are Rutgers and Fordham.

The remaining schools are all reaches to varying degrees . . . including UMich, which is an increasingly tough admit for out-of-state students. Your best chances probably come at NYU, Emory, and Cornell.

uwGPA 3.8 is below the admission average of UMich while your SAT is a little bit above the 75th percentile last year. It would be a low to mid reach for you as they consider GPA to be more important.

@billcsho happy to say I was accepted

Congrats!
By the way, what is your UM recalculated uwGPA without subgrades?

Just so you know CC forum people tend to overstate how hard it is to get into top public schools. The larger the public school the more they have to rely on stats for acceptances. They all have “holistic” admissions but in reality the stats are the most important thing they look at (and interest in the school of course, they do actually want you to attend). This OP was a match for UM from the start.

@billcsho uw without subgrades is 3.8
