Chance me JMU & VT

Hello, I'm applying to both JMU and VT reg decision. I live in Northern Virginia.(more competitive area for college admissions) I feel like my SAT scores are pretty low so I would like to know my chances. Also my grades freshman year were average (I believe I earned a 3.4 GPA freshman year). I was able to bring it to a 3.94 gpa by the end of last year(Junior Year). Thank you!

*3.94 GPA (Weighted, my highschool does not have unweighted)
*1630 SAT(610 Math, 520 CR, 500 W)
*National Honers Society
*DECA Club
*Competed for DECA meet and qualified for states as Junior
*Soccer for my highschool(Freshman year-now)
*Volunteered at church for 4 years
*Taught a religious education class for 1 year

Grades in AP classes
*Sophmore:AP World(A-),
*Junior:AP US History (A-)& AP Pysch(A)
*Taking AP Computer Science, AP Human Geo and AP Lit and planning to get A's in these too

I'm taking my SAT again this weekend and planning on bringing it to the 1700 range. Thanks again.

just like to add that i’m also Hispanic, don’t know if that has a factor or not.

JMU: Match/High match
VA Tech: High match

I know Virginia school districts rarely give out UW…

DECA is very competitive in nova, i know firsthand
are you FCPS? talk to your career center specialist or whatever, there might be some guaranteed admissions program or something

I believe you’re a very solid candidate for JMU. JMU and Tech don’t care about the writing portion of the SAT, just CR and Math. It’s good you’re trying to bring the score up one more time, but even if it doesn’t come up much, you should be okay. Your composite score puts you just into the range. Your GPA is excellent, and you’ve taken challenging AP classes, which are the two things JMU and Tech admissions care the most about – level of rigor of your curriculum and your GPA in it. You should also be pretty solid for Tech. Their SAT’s are only a bit higher than JMU’s, and that’s mostly because of the engineering applicants. At Tech, it depends on the college you’re applying to how difficult it is to get in. Some are harder than others. For the College of Arts & Sciences or College of Natural Resources, you should be fine. For engineering, you’d have to get your SAT score way up in math. Being Hispanic will give you a HUGE boost at both schools. That combined with your scores and grades makes you very likely to get into both schools. My son got into both JMU and Tech and chose JMU because it is more undergraduate focused, and classes are a bit smaller there. He absolutely loves JMU and is glad he made the choice he did.
