I'm a little concerned about getting into James Madison, which is my top choice school (applying in-state). My main concern is my GPA but I was hoping you all could tell me how strong or weak of a candidate I am.

My GPA including first-semester senior grades is 3.0 UW, 3.17 W and my course load is:

AP Lit/Comp
AP Psych
AP Human Geography
AP Biology
French III
Advanced Math

I've participated in
FBLA - 3 years
Chess Club - 2 years
Frisbee Club - 1 year (Founder / President)
Volunteer at nearby Hospital ~100 hours

My essay was likely fairly weak but my teacher rec was rather glowing. I've looked at things like their Common Data Set and my SAT is in their top 3-5%, but my GPA is in their bottom 3-5%, which is concerning. I think it's also worth noting that I've taken both French and Spanish up to level three, if that makes any difference to most colleges.

Let me know if any more information could be helpful and thanks in advance!

Well since your GPA is low dont count on your SAT to make up for it. However, if you wrote phenomenal essays and got great recs then you may have a shot.

If you are in the top 50% of your h.s. class you should be okay since you are in state. It’s likely the stats are skewed because of OOS applicants who must have higher stats. You should also make alternate plans. Lots of good schools in VA. Have you applied to Longwood and Radford?

I was going to apply to Radford and CNU, but if I don’t get in to JMU I will likely just do NOVAs guaranteed acceptance or go to George Mason, so I didn’t bother.

Your gpa is a little low and you said your essay is weak too; that’s not good. However, you’ve taken a bunch of AP classes and are in state and you say your sat is at the top of their charts. I think you’re probably a high match. It’s nice that you’ve taken up to french and spanish 3 but it seems to be that colleges would rather have seen you gone up through AP in one of those rather than be ok at both. All in all, I’d say you’re a solid applicant so don’t worry
