Volunteer in Local Hospital

Volunteered in villages and innercity slums in Chennai, India last summer (200+ hours). Talked to patients about eye care and hygiene, conducted eye examinations, educated them about surgery if a cataract was detected. Observed many cataract operations and shadowed doctors the entire time.

Was an unpaid intern over the summer in one of Asias largest diabetes center also in Chennai. Attended lectures, shadowed doctors, watched in on surgeries, and was also a translator (Patients from the North only knew Hindi and local nurses English/Tamil).

This summer plan to to research in MSU. Not sure of details though.
Might attend NYLF.
Will defo do more volunteering in Chennai.

Please chance me for:
Wayne State Medstart
MSU D.O.
Case Western
Northwestern HPME
University of Pittsburgh
Any other combined med program that you guys think might fit me. :)

How about Ivies? Standford? My GPA isn't perfect, but i'll give it a shot...

i think your Med related ECs are awesome. However, I don’t think i am qualified to chance you for the programs, but i’d think you are a strong candidate.

I think you should apply to the Siena/AMC BS/MD program, because they don’t necessarily want astronomical stats (4.0 GPA, 2400 SAT types); they’re more into community service and sizeable third-world country volunteer activities, which you have. If I were you, I’d definitely look into taking the SAT and SAT II’s (a lot of BS/MD programs want a math and a science SAT II) as well as taking AP Bio.

Blegh, I want to be done with standardized tests!

AP Bio isn’t offered at my school, unfortunately :(

Get higher ACT and include U of Toledo - they have 2 programs.

From personal experience, you’ll want to definitely raise your GPA (I’m going to assume this unweighted; if so, what is your weighted score?) and retake the ACT/SAT tests. Moreover, I highly suggest (almost implore) you to take SAT II: Bio, IIC, and Chemistry; at the bare minimum. Lastly, as per comments previously, add other lower ranked programs (Sienna, George Washington, Union/RPI, etc.) as they do not put heavy emphasis on grades and test scores. In regards to AP Bio (or Chemistry), the scores themselves will help if you have them, but because you don’t have the course either 1) take the test anyways and get the easy 5, or 2) make sure you are taking most of the AP provided by the school (this is essentially what they look at).

Okay, one big thing that got me was that I took Chem Honors in freshmen year, didn’t qualify for AP Chem b/c of math in sophomore year and thus ended up taking it senior year. The problem is that with programs like BU and HPME, they REQUIRE Chem SAT II, so study it over the summer and take a fall test for it. As per suggested, do the same with Math II (another requirement), and one other SAT II.

Other programs of suggestion:
Penn State (my SAT score isn’t very shabby but not phenomenal but I’ve heard they place an emphasis on ECs from previous students so you may qualify).

While I have not completed the interview process and thus cannot be completely qualified to answer, that’s my input :).
