Chance Me: Late Application

Hello! I’m applying to boarding schools and local private schools for my 9th grade year. I already submitted my applications and had my interviews for exeter and andover but I want to add one more school that takes late applications.

INFO:
NJHS President
Tech Club President
Model UN
Dancer for 10 years
Consecutive straight As for 3 years
SSAT Upper Level- 2070 total (66%)

Any recommendations for schools?

Hi! I’m definitely not qualified to chance people but your EC’s are mwah. Are you a repeat applicant? (I’ve never heard of middle schools with Model UN, lol)
For schools, I’d say to look at schools with average scores closer to your percentile. Take a look at the SSAT Target Scores from TestInnovators, and the average scores on boardingschoolreview.
I’m not completely sure how much a late application affects acceptance rates-- maybe a parent could chime in on that? Are you full pay? Do you have any hooks?

Um, there aren’t many schools with a later app date, but I’ll see what I can find
And that SSAT score might pose some difficulties (have you considered retaking it? if so, what do you think you would get?)

I’m going to assume you’d prefer a 9-12 co-ed private boarding school in the U.S.
So here’s what I got :

FEBRUARY 1st

Cheshire Academy (used to go to a public school near there lol) in CT, your SSAT score wouldn’t be a problem here

George School in PA, maybe a bit of a reach?

Cushing Academy in MA- SSAT should be fine

Emma Willard in NY- dunno if you’re a girl, but here’s a great all-girls school. It’s quite a reach with that SSAT tho

FEBRUARY 20

The Webb School in TN - SSAT would be fine here, uh and yeah

I’m sure that if you google up something like “private schools with late admissions” more schools would come up.

Also, I’m pretty sure most of these schools would allow the Feb. SSAT, which if you could retake, may open up some more possibilities. I would also make you a much more competitive candidate for Exeter and Andover, which as of right now might not work out for you. (I hope that doesn’t come off as too harsh) Anyways, basing off your grades, I think you should be able to raise it up to an 80 percentile+

Hope that helps!

NMH is feb 1 — might like it if you like andover?

@TheHappinessFund Thanks for the advice! This is my first time applying. I’m not 100% what a “hook” is, but I’m a Jamaican-American female if that counts.

@doodlebean8 Thanks for the list of schools. I know some girls that go to Emma Willard School and I might apply. I plan on taking the February SSAT so I can try to get a better score. I’m aiming for a 2180, which will bump up my score to at least above the 80th percentile.

  1. Look at schools with “rolling admissions”.

  2. Consider looking beyond the HADES. Heck, look beyond GLADCHEMMS. Think about what would truly be a good fit.

  3. A “hook” would be something that differentiates you from other applicants, that the school is particularly looking for. Adding to an institution’s cultural diversity can be a hook. Being potentially great sport recruit can be a hook, if the school values that particular sport. Dance could be a hook, depending on your talent and accomplishments, and the kind of dance program that they have, but it doesn’t sound like those are the sort of schools that you are interested in.

this list might help: http://www.boardingschools.com/find-a-school/quick-lists/rolling-date-application-deadline

If you find yourself really interested in a school whose deadline has already passed, submit your application anyways. Our kiddo applied to several schools last year and got the date for one incorrect. It happens. We encouraged kiddo to go ahead and submit. The school reached out for an interview and our kid received an acceptance letter. Kiddo was asked during the interview why the application was submitted late, but was honest, owned it, and said I made a mistake.
