COMMON APP ESSAY:
I'm writing about track, but it's not one of those "jock" essays about winning a big race. It's much deeper than that--it's about how the track is my home and the runners are my family.

INTENDED MAJOR:
Undecided, but I'm interested in Latin and psychology (specifically linguistics).

DEMOGRAPHICS:
Race: White
Gender: Female
State: NY

LEGACIES:
Harvard (3 people in my family)
Vassar
Cornell

Wow definitely strong candidate. Your legacies definitely help but depend on which family member (i.e. second cousin twice removed probably not as strong as a parent). If you have any weakness if would be your scores… Especially for the Ivies maybe aim for at least 2200 on the sat (work on cr), and if you can retake physics sat 2 to get over 700? Or don’t submit that one as you have plenty of others.

Harvard/Yale -mid/high reach (for everyone, your legacy will help though!)
Brown- low/mid reach
Cornell/Amherst/Williams/swarthmore/middlebury - low reach

I don’t really know for the others – sorry! But good job and good luck!

Thanks! My legacies at Harvard are my mom, uncle, and first cousin, so that should probably help. About test scores, I’ve decided to use my ACT because yeah, my SAT isn’t great. That way I don’t have to submit SAT 2s either unless I want to (I’ll probably submit Math 2 and Latin anyway).

If you decide to apply to Binghamton, please learn to spell the name correctly. Have you run the Net Price Calculators at these schools to see which are affordable?

A strong candidate for sure! Harvard and Yale are reaches, as always (even with your legacies.) I’m not sure about Brown, but I do think Cornell is a strong possibility. Low reach.
Williams, Amherst, Swarthmore, and Middlebury are mid-reaches (go liberal arts!!)
Vassar, Bates, and Haverford are low reaches. (maybe Haverford is also a mid-reach)
Smith and Bryn Mawr are matches IF YOU SHOW INTEREST. You could definitely receive merit aid from them; if Smith offers you the STRIDE scholarship, I urge you to consider it (as long as you like the school!)
Good luck and have fun with senior year!

@austinmshauri: It was a typo. People make typos. I’m applying to Binghamton as a safety, and because it’s a SUNY, so it’s extremely affordable (as is Geneseo).

Oh and by the way, I’m also trying to get recruited by the cross country/ track coaches at these schools. My times are definitely good enough for DIII schools, but on the lower end for DI schools. I’ve contacted a few of the coaches already, and they seem interested, so that will probably help my application.

WOW those legacies will already help–not to mention you have killer stats:) Good luck and hope you get into your dream school

Hi, before I try chancing you, could you tell me which program you are applying to (for the schools in which you do not apply to the entire school).

Except for Cornell, none of the schools that I’m applying to have “programs.” For Cornell, I don’t know which school I’d apply to yet, so you can just skip that one (it’s not high on my list anyway).

@strawberry3‌ It would help if you are recruited for athletics. If not, the captain positions definitely show interest and leadership, but aren’t as strong as they could be. Stick with the ACT scores, those are good enough. Also, consider taking more SAT subject tests (or the same ones again), because although they aren’t “required” for Harvard admission, it looks bad not to submit them. Best of luck, chance me back!

Very interesting! I think you have a pretty good chance of getting into those schools. Especially since you have family that went to harvard!

Chance mine please!

You have a great chance at all of the schools. However HYPSM are always reaches for everyone.

Your athletic accomplishments are impressive, however, you seem to have many reach schools on your list. I’d recommend applying to some “match” schools that you are interested in outside of your safeties. Have you taken a look at Banard or Mount Holyoke? Some possible ones to look into.

Anyways, you have a good shot at some of them, just remember to have a good range of schools.

I think your stats are very impressive, but I feel for the type of schools you’re applying to some may be a reach. You still have a great chance but I’d just try applying for schools you know that you will get accepted into just incase. Keep up the good work (:
