Chance Me! Low GPA/High SAT. Will chance back!

Will be applying to a SCIENCE major. Most likely computer science. Not sure if that's an advantage or not

I'm a junior.

Asian Female, California

GPA:

Unweighted:

school scale: 3.6/3.7
standard scale (out of 4.3?): 3.3

Weighted:
UC Scale: 3.9
(not sure how to weight otherwise)

Rank:
Not shown anymore but I believe it's around top 20% :/ (if you weed out everyone who's taking Math 2 and Art, I should be ranked MUCH higher)

SAT: 2220; 680 R / 790 W / 750 M (missed 9 SC in reading. retake or no?)

Courses:
Freshman year: Every honors course I could possibly take
Sophmore year: Every honors course + AP World + 2 sciences
Junior Year: Honors PreCalc, AP Bio, AP Chem

ECs:
- Varsity Track 4 years
- 70+ hours of community service and still growing
- California Scholarship Federation (CSF)
- Own several websites [since 4th grade]
- Own several businesses
- Websites + businesses making thousands a year
- Shadowing Orthopedic Surgeon (haven't started yet)

(note: I did not completely program my websites/businesses from scratch. It will be submitted as a portfolio for my business but not as something I've done by myself completely. I want to major in Computer Science to be able to make all my ideas real.)

Hook: Nada, unless a teenage entrepreneur counts :D

Schools:
Main UCs (UCLA, UCSD, UCB)
UC Davis
UC Irvine
Cornell
Brown
Columbia
Cal Poly
San Jose State
Stanford (lmaoo)

Recs:

Counselor- doesn't know me, it'll be generic
Teachers- too early to tell, but will hopefully have one amazing one from my english teacher who's known for her recs.

Essay:
Finished it in 30 minutes but I have a year to fine tune the heck out of it :D. It really emphasizes my business + passion and explains my poor grades sophomore year + 2nd semester of freshman year

I think it's pretty darn good but we'll see!

bumpbump  anyone?

Main UCs (UCLA, UCSD, UCB)-UCLA high match, UCSD match, UCB low reach (your GPA hurts you)
UC Davis-in
UC Irvine-in
Cornell-mid reach
Brown-mid reach
Columbia-high reach
Cal Poly-in
San Jose State-in
Stanford (lmaoo)-high reach
Your problem is your class rank; did you not take the most rigorous courses?
Chance Back

I would mostly agree with the previous post except for Ivies.

Cornell is a much better engineering school than Columbia, and Brown.

Brown= lower reach (Brown being the ugly duckling within the Ivies)
Columbia = mid reach (not so good engineering)
Cornell = higher Reach (but still much lower than Stanford)

You would have had a much better shot if your GPA were higher.

Since you are applying to Stanford, how come you are not trying for Harvey Mudd or Cooper Union engineering? Cooper Union covers all your tuition, not sure if you knew that.

I took the most rigorous courses available until junior year, when I decided ap bio Chem and h precalc was enough

My gpa is so low because our school accounts classes such as Math 3 and Foods into the ranking. The majority of students take these classes and have extremely high gpas. The honors/ap people, however, are extremely competitive. Solid As in those classes don’t even exist. The course rigor does allow us to score high on AP exams though  Also, our honors classes are NOT weighted, so those taking the classes have pretty low GPAs.

IckGlue- I’ll be applying there for sure  Forgot to include it on my list!

Oh yea, thanks to the both of you for chancing :-)!

i disagree with UCLA ucsd etc being “high matches”. your gpa isnt that bad but it isnt that spectacular(average gpa at ucla is 4.3…thats ******** imo)

if you dont mind me asking, what kind of website businesses do you have?

Main UCs (UCLA, UCSD, UCB) - UCLA: Low/mid Reach, UCSD: High Match/Low Reach, UCB: Low/mid Reach

@Icandividebyzero

I beg to differ, how can UCD, UCI be both matches, and Cal Poly and SJSU be both low matches?

And how can Columbia, Brown and Cornell all be the same reach?

If you note again, the OP is trying to apply for engineering school.

Ivies engineering selectivity: Cornell>=Columbia>Brown

Columbia is not known for its engineering, and Brown is even less known.

I went to an Ivy and my college’s engineering program is so so at best.

For CA public overall engineering school selectivity: Cal Poly=UCD> UCI>SJSU
For some particular engineering majors selectivity: Cal Poly>UCD>UCI>SJSU

For Fall 2010 Cal Poly admitted engineering freshman stats:

Avg GPA = 4.03
Avg ACT = 31
Avg SAT = 1372 out of 1600

UCD, UCI, Cal Poly overall university acceptance stats are extremely similar.

For SJSU, it is a substantial magnitude lower.

UC Irvine-in
Cornell-High Match
Brown-Low Reach
Columbia-Low Reach
Cal Poly-In

thanks and chanced back! :)

bumpp!

ickglue- you seem to know your info quite a bit, so how much of a reach is “higher reach” for cornell?

is it still an attainable goal?

Cornell has probably the most reputable, and highest quality engineering school, out of the Ivies.

Harvard, Yale, Columbia= LACs with engineering departments all ride off the coattail of their respective Universities’ names. Don’t get me wrong, they are all solid programs, but if you got accepted to a Yale/Harvard/Columbia/Brown engineering and MIT engineering, MIT wins hands down by 10 miles. Majoring in engineering in Harvard is like majoring in English in MIT, how strange is that?

As far as how high of a reach is Cornell for you? Even though Cornell is considered one of the “easiest” Ivies to get into, this will be no cake walk. Not wanting to discourage you, it will be a reach due to your GPA. Cornell (especially engineering) probably has its pick of top 1-~+3% high school students with flawless GPA, top notch SAT and EC.

What might help you is you are female, since they very much want to have a diverse freshman class (especially in engineering, given the lack of female engineering students). Your admission essay will make a big difference, since they REALLY read it with a fine tooth comb. And the in-person admission interview will also give the chance to outshine the other applicants.

Sorry for the long winded answer, but the lazy person answer is this:

For engineering school selectivity:

Caltech>=MIT>Stanford (a real engineering school)>Harvard (only because it is big H)>=Yale (only because it is big Y)>Columbia (only because it is C)>=Cornell (a real engineering school)>Brown

As a final point of reference, if you got into Cal’s engineering, you should have a non-trivial shot at Cornell.

Also remember that Cornell is in Ithaca, and that place is NOT for everyone.

You are a match for all the UC schools because of your businesses and SATs.
However, Cornell, Columbia, Stanford, Brown are all reaches because of your average grades. I’d say you still have a chance because of your strong ECs.

UCLA-high match
UCSD-match
UCB-low reach
UC Davis-in
UC Irvine-in
Cornell-high reach
Brown-high reach (comp sci is very competitive)
Columbia-mid/high reach
Cal Poly-in
San Jose State-in
Stanford (lmaoo)-high reach

Your rank is pretty low for these schools, and so is your GPA. ECs aren’t hugely impressive, except for your online businesses. ORM is bad for you, though being a female interested in engineering does help. Essays and recs will be super important, so make sure you fine-tune your essays so they really stand out! Good luck :)

lol yea thats the only amazing part of my ecs, but the big emphasis and why i’m so unsure of my chances ^^;

poop such high reaches for all of them >.>;

ickglue, you said cornell was the hardest but then you put columbia ahead of it because it was the big C? also, if i were to go to computer sci, would that be undergrad engineering then? o-o or is there an undergrad program for comp sci? i’m kind of clueless on these things

thanks!

bumpbump need more opinions  everyones seems to differ

bumppp will chance back :)

Bumpbump

No one? O-o
