Essays/LORs/Other
(Optionally, guess how strong these are and include any other relevant information or circumstances.)
Essays should be good (8.5/10), will be spending a lot of time and having many people look over it.
Teacher LORs should also be good (8/10), Counselor LOR will be pretty average (6/10) bc it’s pretty rare to actually meet face to face with the counselors unless it’s for a schedule change or some issue like that

Cost Constraints / Budget
(High school students: please get a budget from your parents and use the Net Price Calculators on the web sites of colleges of interest.)
No cost constraints but would definitely prefer a cheaper school over an expensive school if all else is similar

Schools
T20 schools (emphasis on Rice, UPENN, Yale), UT Austin (auto admit bc of school rank), Texas A&M

Oh also I forgot to mention under extracurriculars that I have published over a dozen literary works (poems/short stories/etc) in several literary journals/mags (not huge ones like the new yorker but pretty notable within the smaller lit mags)

Being auto-admit at UT Austin means that you are in at a very strong university. I hope that this takes a lot of pressure off the process since you know you will have a great university to attend.

Otherwise you are a very strong candidate. Admissions at the top universities in the US is very difficult to predict. I think that you should pay close attention to be differences between the top schools, apply to the ones that will be the best fit for you, and see what happens.

Yes, I totally agree. UT Austin is an amazing school, and I’m extremely grateful that I qualify for its auto admission (it really does lessen the stress coming from the unpredictability of college admissions). Thank you so much for your input!

Is UTA right for you? By that I mean if you are looking at Rice and Penn, they are much smaller. You have a chance of course at any top school but they are reaches for all. If you want cheaper, I’d suggest you look at schools with a lot of scholarships that are merit based…Washington & Lee has the Johnson Scholarship. Not sure your city but they also have a Dallas resident full tuition scholarship I believe. SMU has some great merit. Then there’s Vandy, WUSTL, and Emory that offers many scholarships.

Publics wise there is lots of money but mainly large schools although not as large as UT…but great aid….from an Arkansas, OU, Alabama, Arizona.

You’re off to a great start. If UT is too large, look at SMU, Rochester, Wake Forest, Tufts, etc as outstanding mid size choices as alternative to the top tier schools should you not get in.

Any school leadership? When you apply to UT, what major will you choose?

Good shot at T20. Kid’s friends at a similar sized TX HS got into Vandy and Wash U ED. Rice is possible too.

What rank was your sibling? Special hook?

My sibling was only enrolled in the high school I’m at until sophomore year (rank 2 at the time), then went to TAMS, its like a college style high school experience for junior and senior years.

Is your sibling male or female?

Female

That’ll be a big difference in college admissions.

why? What’s his sister have to do with him? Confused - but being female (and he’s not), other than maybe certain tech majors, is not a leg up. What am I missing?

Asian male and female are treated totally differently.

Yes, at certain schools, it can be a difference (sometimes female acceptance rate is higher, a few times male acceptance rate is higher). I think it moreso depends on how many males a particular school or major has relative to females. Regardless, I would just like to put out my best efforts and not really worry about factors that I cannot control.

The sibling legacy at Yale is interesting. You potentially have a higher than average shot there. They’ll want to ensure you have similar stats at your sister before admitting you. However Yale is quite unpredictable.

Hi, I wonder if you could shed more light on how they are treated. Thank you.
