Chance Me & Match Me! WA senior going for CompSci; good class rigor + SAT, average EC's [4.0, 1570]

Income < $30,000
Budget = $20,000
4-person family.

My family’s economic situation is a little weird.

I was surprised I didn’t make QuestBridge (ranked 15 colleges), but my essays were really rough and I didn’t do CPS.

My first-choice is UW, but it seems like that’s more of a reach for me.

Ok. I think Oregon State is not a financial safety. I ran the NPC with an EFC of 0, and it still shows total cost of $30K for a WA student (even with an estimated scholarship).

So your safety is Washington State. Is it affordable? Would you be happy to attend?

If you feel like your essays for QB weren’t great, have you spent some time making sure the essays for UW are really good?

If you have the applications for Washington State and UW put together, I would suggest looking into some private schools that meet need, if you are comfortable writing all the essays (they can require a lot of essays…)

For example, Stanford estimates a total cost of $1,500 per year for a family with $30K income. That would be a lot cheaper than Oregon State. But of course you have to get in.

I’m sure there are some private schools out there that have good CS, good need-based aid, and are easier admits. Maybe other posters can suggest some great schools for the OP to consider – I have to go catch a plane this morning

If your income is $30K, then I’m not sure how your budget is $20K.

Perhaps you have assets or home equity that disqualified for QB. We’ll never know but it’s ok - now it’s phase two.

If you’re NMSF (Tulsa) and will soon be NMF, then Alabama, UTD, Maine, others - you’ll have that out. Or in state schoools.

But if not NMF, you can be at $20K or close to it.

But if income is $30K - not sure how your budget is $20K.

You’ll have options though.

Good luck.

PS - here is a list of schools that meet need. You should run the NPC on some to see their cost. They come in different sizes and selectivity levels.
