Chance me maybe?

PA Resident
Race: Black
Gender: Male

HS GPA: 3.3 or 3.4

SAT: 1430 Total (I'm going to retake it)
M: 440
CR:480
W:510

EC's
-Marching Band
-Drumline
-Percussion Ensemble
-Drumming lessons every week
-Semi-pro Baseball
...and possibly Mock Trial, World Affairs club, and the School Newspaper this year

Things that might get counted against me:
-NO AP's or honors so far (I'm going to try to get as many as I can for my senior year, and I might do dual enrollment).
-I've been to 2 different high schools in three years, not because of discipline problems, but because of my mom's inability to pay for Catholic school (I went to Catholic school grades 9 and 11).

Take a look at the bubble chart and see where you are:

http://admissions.psu.edu/info/counselors/bubble_chart.pdf

That chart is totally false. You will be accepted to Penn State but may have to do some time at a branch campus.

Thank you both for your responses! I really hope I get into UP because I want to play in the Blue Band and just enjoy Penn State’s largest campus :D

I’m guessing that your username is a hint of your major! ;)

First off, best of luck on getting in when you apply!

I have to say that your you might be slightly below the cutline for University Park, however you have another year i’m assuming to improve it all?

Good ec’s, Penn State doesn’t take those into huge consideration though.

2+2 is also a solid program from what i’ve heard, best of luck!

@jwestbrook12 Lol you’re correct! 10 points to you haha! I’m aiming for anything above a 3.6 since that would continue the upward trend I’ve been experiencing. Also, I’m trying to raise that SAT score over an 1800. And I don’t mean to sound greedy, but if I don’t get into UP, I might just forget about Penn State. I REALLY want to get into the main campus. I’ve already switched high schools, and I don’t want to experience transferring again. I might just go to UDel if they accept me if Penn denies me.

I was in the same position, holding the same general plan that I would skip PSU if I didn’t get main branch…my backup being SUNY Oswego. But if you accomplish those goals in terms of your academic stats, i’d say you have a decent shot…best!

We’ll keep saying this to all the chance questions:

Penn State (not Penn, never Penn, the nickname is State or PSU but not Penn, the ivy league school in Philly) does not take much into account for regular admissions aside from GPA (not counting senior grades) and SAT or ACT scores. Your ecs and community service hours barely have a place to go on the app. The “essay” is a short personal statement. The bubble chart is fairly accurate, but of course it’s not inflexible because things shift slightly from year to year.

UDel’s admissions are significantly more demanding. Unless you are a Delaware resident, but even then, I’m not sure it’s realistic to think that if you are rejected at PSU, you’ll get into UDel.

The best thing anyone worried about their PSU chances can do is apply EARLY – in September at the very latest. And agree to attend summer session instead of starting in the fall.

I’m going to apply as soon as registration opens up on Sept. 1st. And also, if you agree to do a summer session, will it be at UP?

Yes, summer session is at UP. Good luck!
