Things that might get counted against me:
-NO AP's or honors so far (I'm going to try to get as many as I can for my senior year, and I might do dual enrollment).
-I've been to 2 different high schools in three years, not because of discipline problems, but because of my mom's inability to pay for Catholic school (I went to Catholic school grades 9 and 11).

Hi. I can’t say what “chances” are - I just don’t do that. But I can make some suggestions/comments. Definitely retake the SAT. Also, try the ACT in September. You may score higher (many do - both of my kids did). Good idea to add honors courses for senior year - they like that and it would add to your WGPA. Are you a possible baseball recruit? I think that would help.

I think it would be more important to add the more rigorous coursework than to just add ECs for the sake of the application (that’s what it would look like). Your commitment to music is excellent. Any sports in school? Do you play on your HS baseball team? Team captain? Community service?

With your current stats, if you get in, I can safely say that you wouldn’t get merit aid (my DD’s stats were better than yours and she didn’t get one penny of merit aid). Would that be an issue for you?

I hope this helped.

P.S. Love what you named the thread.

Thank you so much for your response LINYMOM! I was thinking about taking the ACT, but the science section of the test scares me! I’m good at bio and chem, but the physics part would kill me. And those EC’s I want to add are things that I actually want to do, I just wasn’t too interested and didn’t understand the significance of EC’s during my freshman and sophomore years. I’ll have to work on my skills to become a recruit, and I play actually play for my town, but I plan to make the varsity team this year. And the merit aid wouldn’t bee too much of a problem since I’m a first generation student, I could probably get some black scholarships, and many more need based and special scholarships.

Doctor,
Since you live in Pa., I and going to assume you are within driving distance of Delaware. I strongly suggest scheduling an interview on campus. It can only help you make an impression, and demonstrate interest in the school.

The Science part of the ACT is more about deciphering their questions. There are apparently tricks to improve. Look at an ACT book for tips. It has less to do with actual science than you might think. Check it out.
Don’t let your scores scare you. I would also try to find out if Delaware has some minority programs and scholarships. Some schools do. I have no idea about Del.

Good Luck

FutureDoctor: As socaldad said, the science section of ACT is more about reading than science. Completely do-able with practice. The test is really worth a shot. It’s usually offered in early September; you’d get your score around the end of the month so you can compare to your SAT. Still take the SAT again too. There is no doubt that scores can be raised with studying and practice.

@Socaldad42 I am. I live outside of Philly in Delaware County, so I’m like 30 minutes from campus! Also, I’ve always considered going down there and getting interviewed, but I’ve just never taken any action. I definitely will now because UDel is my #2 choice school. And I’m pretty sure UDel offers minority scholarships, but I’m going to check just to be sure. And thank you and LINYMOM for telling me about the science section. Now I’m more than confident that I will pass that section :D
