Chance Me- McCombs, c/o 2023

Hi!
I am just wondering about my chances at receiving admission into McCombs. I have a low SAT, but according to the admission stats for the freshmen this year, I’m pretty much exactly the average (1326 SAT vs my 1330, 3.45 GPA vs my 3.5). Just trying to not get my hopes up.

ECs:
Volunteering at Mobile Loaves and Fishes (meals on wheels type of deal) for the past five years
Ballet (in school, 4 years)
Harp (in school, won two 1s at UIL, 4 years)
President of a Jewish club at school (1 year, VP 2 years)
Sunday school assistant teacher (4 years)
Debate (freshman and sophomore year, won a top speaker award)
Staff creator for a social justice site

Academics:
1330 SAT
3.5 unweighted GPA, 4.6 weighted GPA
non-ranking TX HS
AP courses (sophomore & junior year as follows: WHAP, AP English Comp, AP Comp Sci, AP French, AP Physics 1)

Writing:
Essay was a sob story, short answers were good. I know the essays and short answers don’t affect a whole lot though.

Teacher Reccs:
They probably said I was dedicated or something along those lines

If you respond-- thank you! I have just a smidge of hope, but feel free to crush it

I’m on the same boat as you (1320 SAT, 3.4 GPA) applied to McCombs but OOS. Idk if we will get in but in the end it will all work out. Best of luck to you!

Thank you! I hate to be a downer, but I know OOS students often have a tough time (90% of students must be in-state) good luck!

Hi, I was just accepted to McCombs on Friday, January 18, 2019. I thought I would list some of my stats for people who are curious in the future.

My SAT/ACT scores were definitely not competitive at all. SAT: 1260 ACT: 23 However, I did receive high scores (nearly perfect) on the essay portion of the SAT and ACT; whether or not this helped me, we will never know.

Rank: Top 6% (specifically top 3%). 4/138

High School: Hamshire-Fannett high School. Known in the area for high test scores on STAAR tests. Very rural and conservative. Teachersand Curriculum: Subpar, so it is easier for the brighter students to get a higher ranking (the key is to take all AP classes throughout high school).

IMPORTANT EXTRA INFO
Although I wasn’t strong in test scores, I did attend an application only camp at McCombs over the summer, and I believe this is the only reason I got into McCombs. I was fortunate enough to be chosen for this all-expense paid camp, and at the camp I met with several recruiters and admissions officers and got to know them, and was even invited to a recruiting meeting a few months later. Out of 850 applicants for the camp, I was 1 of 50 that were selected. Without this, I don’t think I would’ve gotten accepted, so I highly recommend that people apply to this camp.
