Chance Me: McGill / U of T

Applying to both McGill and Toronto from New York. Currently a junior from Long Island and McGill is my dream school. I know these places don’t take subjective factors (EC’s, essays, recommendations), which hurts me a little. But here’s what I have to offer:

SAT I: CR660, M710, W680-- 2050/1370
SAT II: Bio 740 and History 750
APs: Euro 5 Gov 5 Bio 3 Eng 4 APUSH 4
GPA: 93.5%

My school doesn’t rank, and I’ll be the only student from my school (and one of a handful from Long Island) applying to McGill. I’m looking into law or public policy, so I’m only applying for a B.A.-- the most basic major. Please chance me!

You definitely have a solid chance. Your average is way over the cut off, and this is without including AP’s/SATs.

Remember McGill has an acceptance rate north of 45%, and this includes tougher faculties such as Desautels skewing the rate down.

Same for UToronto; They love international students, so you’re set.

@IntlApplicant I know McGill has an unusually high acceptance rate, but isn’t that only because it’s so accommodating to Canadians? I’ve heard it’s far far tougher to get into McGill as an American; apparently they hate us lol. I’m trying to find the acceptance rate for Americans into McGill, but that stat is impossible to find.

@jee895 To be honest, McGill loves American students and its easier to get in as an American. If you are from Canada, then all you have is a GPA and class rank to be chosen by. This is the reason why most Canadian applicants already have an idea that they will get in more definitively as opposed to the holistic approach by US institutions. As a US applicant, you can be forgiven for not having a really high GPA and class rank by also relying on SAT scores, SAT 2 scores, and AP scores. Thus, there is more opportunities for US applicants to show themselves. Top Canadian Universities tend to have way higher acceptances because of the simple fact of the usual obviousness of a candidate’s outcome. My high school (public) shows the acceptances of past years to universities through Naviance and students from our school that got into McGill ranged from fairly weak to pretty strong (in terms of GPA and SAT). It ranged from around 1700-2400 with GPAs ranging from 3.6-4.8. Around 90% of the kids who applied within those ranges got in. Of course, acceptance rate differs with each faculty, but I hope this gave u something useful.

I can second what XAtlas said.

My school also uses naviance and McGill has about 30 acceptances for the 41 applicants over the past few years whose IB scores ranged from 32 - 42, and SAT scores from sub 1700 to 2300.

I’d be very very surprised if you did not get into both these universities.

Hey! I was wondering if someone could tell me what they think my chance of getting in are and when I should receive a response, especially since I just applied on November 30th:

  • UW 4.0 GPA throughout high school.
  • 1310 on my SAT I (weakness) [650 math, 660 English]
  • 720 on Math level 2 (SAT II)
  • 800 on French SAT II
  • I am in my schools Key club, Spanish Newspaper, I am in the National Honors Society, I am peer tutor, and I have been in my school's varsity soccer team since 9th grade.
  • Ranking: 6/76
  • My school just started offering AP's my Senior year, AP Calc and AP Spanish, and I am taking both of them.
  • My semester 1 average during my Senior year was a 95.

What do you think my chances are?

@IntlApplicant are you doing the IB diploma? If you don’t mind me asking, what are your predicted/final scores?
